Should have let them smash Woking up. Might have improved the place.

SOCCER YOBS FACING FRESH CRACKDOWN.
more police trained to spot hooligans.

More police officers are training to spot hooligans at football matches to combat violence involving Exeter City.
Ten more officers are undergoing a course today to identify hooligans causing trouble around matches.
Although the programme has been planned for sometime it comes just after seven arrests surrounding the Woking v Exeter match last saturday when officers in riot gear had to draw batons to control hooligans.
The newly-trained officers will be called upon to attend matches and gather evidence to put troublemakers before the courts.
They will use surveillence techniques and be trained to look out for known offenders.
Chief Inspector Adrian Brigden,Commander of Exeter police said:"We have been taking a tough approach to football-related violence and this is part of that response".
"It is not a reaction to last saturdays problems and has been in planning for quite a while now".
"We want to make sure that we have got a robust response in place to deal with any football-related violence and we have enough people trained in evidence gathering to identify those wah are continually responsible for it.
"Its is only a small minority who engage in violence and we are determined to target them"
Trouble around the Woking match resulted in the arrest of seven supporters.
There was disorder in pubs before the match and at half-time and a group of about 50 were escorted home by police.
A witness on a South West Trains service returning to Exeter with the troublemakers said Exeter City fans were frightening.
"It was awful.Absolutely horrendus" the woman dwho did not want to be named, told the Echo,"At Woking the train filled with lots of Exeter fans who became rowdy".
"They were swearing, shouting and it became very frightening"
She said a member of staff on the train was shocked by their behaviour and she also believed that a window was smashed, but that has not been confirmed.
"At Basingstoke,i realised the problem was far more more serious when police lined both sides of the platform with some wearing riot gear and with dogs"

A letter from the Exeter Echo:

POLICE REACTION IS OUT OF PROPORTION

11:40 - 14 November 2006
The story Soccer yobs facing fresh crackdown, Echo, November 10, has made me worried about how much money is being wasted on operations such as crackdowns on the hooligan element of football. As far as I can see, chief football liaison officer Duncan Underhill is wasting a lot of taxpayers' money.

As I am not local to the area and I am currently working in Exeter, I couldn't comment on past experience, however, what I have found at the local where I have been drinking of late seems to be a group of youths having a jolly time - until that day I witnessed an event where the police were coming in filming these so-called "hoolies" just having a good time with their friends.

This just makes me wonder if they are being provoked.

I believe a little more understanding and goodwill wouldn't go a miss. Sorry if this causes offence but I'm 58 years old and a man of the world who has seen a lot in my time.

I cannot see these youths causing any harm to anyone.
