Sign up..we need a big name player.

Seriously, what about Danny Granville? Was never that bad and would be more consitant down the left then Jones?

McSheffery scored loads for Luton earlier this season, he'd do nicely. As would Martijn Reuser, or even Joachim (like we could afford his wages).

I notice a David Cameron of Halifax Town on that list. Surely it couldn't be....

My mate is a Cov fan and he talks highly of McSheffrey - not sure what has happened to him but he might be a goer. Shouldn't be on too higher a wage though as he is quite young and hasn't been involved in any large transfers or anything that would suggest a high wage.

Junior Lewis still on the transfer list then......

My old housemate at uni is a big cov fan and good friends with McSheffrey so always raved about him, looked ok for Luton but then I do remember him coming of against us to chants of 'dont worry, youl be good one day etc' had a pretty crap game that day and we have young strikers of our own who I would rather see given a go.

Reuser and Joachim would be ok but could never afford them, maybe on loan but nothing else.

Certainly is. 6 full appearances and 2 as a sub. Scored his only goal in the 1-0 win over Morecambe...

Chris Iwelumo is a big and reasonably quick striker. Surely his wages wouldn't be too much so long as Stoke don't want a fee.

Wayne Quinn, full back at West Ham is useful too.

However, having wasted 30 seconds typing this I have just remembered the Guy Ipoua thread yesterday - WE HAVE NO MONEY.

Iwelumo of Stoke would be a fantastic signing and the right sort of player to play alongside Leon.

That is not what McGhee has said

"There are not that many good players available to us at the moment. I'm not talking about cost, and I'm not talking about we can't afford this or we can't afford that. I'm talking about the players that would do us, and improve us, just aren't available at the moment"

Make of that what you will

Is McGhee still thinking in first division terms?

There are an awful lot of players on that list who would improve our team (or squad at very least).

I wonder who he really is after.

What we don't want to do is bring in Division 2 quality players who will not do us in the First Division. As Promotion is our target we have to sign First Division quality players or we're lowering our expectations. It's difficult to get that sort of player when you're not deffinatly on target to achieve that goal. To bring in a player or two now would be madness if they're not a step up. No player will sign just for this season. They'll want the contract to go into next season. We don't want to have them on board next season though do we as we'll then have less money to spend on better players. Every top club in this league will be looking for the same players. I really do believe it's bloody difficult but I'm content with what we have.

I agree in part with you Turkey but the problem is that promotion seems quite a way off at the moment.

I'm sure we could sign a couple of players on one year deals that expire in January 2005. That way if we do go up they have five months to prove they're good enough for division one.

Our main priority has to be getting promotion to div one and worrying about the strength of our squad when we are there.

As I said earlier in this thread there are players on that list who are definitely better than what we already have and currently involved in division one football or higher.

What's the point in getting into Division 1 but not having the funds to stay in it?

Our target is not only to get there. We've got to stay there. If we sign players who won't do a job in Division 1 we're making a big mistake. A deal expiring in Jan 2005 isn't a bad idea but it would mean if anyone did come in they would have just half a season in a squad they're not familiar with.

We've still got half a season to go. Now is not the time to panic. We've got Blackwell and Rodger to come back. That'll be like two new signings. Yes we need new players but anyone who thinks a couple of quick fixes are the answer are deluded. We're not going to catch the top 2. We're a decent side who are still finding there feet feet in this division. We've got a lot of players this year who didn't play for us in previous years. You could argue this squad still needs to gell. Q.P.R./Plymouth/Bristol City's squad have been here for a few years and not changed greatly.

You make some very good points Turkey.

However, I believe we need a decent and relatively experienced striker to help get us out of this division. I just don't think we'll score enough goals otherwise.

Still, that's probably why McGhee is in charge and I'm not!

By the way, it's nice to have a discussion about football and the team - as opposed to most of the drivel on this board!
