Did the player's awful display today stem from salary dissatisfaction, what with key players leaving and public criticism of the Board over contract negotiations? In such a young squad, it would be easy for it to spread amongst players. Even worse, do you think some used the game to make a point a la 'sort it out chairman, or else?'. After all, they've appointed an outgoing spokesman to publically criticise the Board. Maybe they're adding to the fire stirred up by the appalling attendances criticism from many fans quarters. You only have to look at Swindon,s display against the Albion recently, when the players didn,t know if their contracts were worth anything.Yes.....contract disputes and uncertainty etc have a huge impact on players performances.

Interesting point CJD. Football's a trade where people always rush to overuse the word 'professional;' it's the worst possible afront you can use against players. But if they're always sooo professional, why do they behave like the kids they often are? It's not beyond the realms possibility of a young 20-something or teenager to throw a staged hissy fit is it and put in a sulky performance? I've seen it many times in other workplaces, why not on a football pitch?

It was alleged when we capitulated against Stoke many players were not happy about their contract situation.

Whilst some people can continue to do a good job in an office or factory if the conditions are poor or the wages low, the vast majority will move on to a better workplace, and better wages, as soon as an opportunity presents itself.Those workers are also less motivated and generally give less than 100% to their employers too. Just a fact of life.Footballers are just the same as you and I.

But by giving less than 100% you are effectively devaluing yourself, especially if you are a footballer whose cash "value" in any actual or potential transfer market or contract negotiations is dependant upon your own performance.

Therefore if you perform below your best/capability you are shooting yourself in the foot, since no other club will regard you as potential for them and you risk your contract being renewed at worse terms or not being renewed at all. Even in a poor team, those that stand out will prosper eventually, whether here or somewhere else. Those that give up or sulk will vanish.

Given the constant whinging about how short a players career is (which is why Premiershite players get paid astronomic wages, since it is clear they are otherwise totally incapable of earning a living during the rest of their entire lives after they have retired at 30-35ish), then it is al the more important for players to try their best all the time.

i think the thread has raised a totally valid point, bearing in mind the young impressionable age of the players.

Glamorous to be a footballer and so think they are a prized asset in demand.

It is when we have lost one in a row. It must be difficult to be Knight and Wilkins. Two defeats in 18 and nobody mentions it much but now one poor performance and suddenly everything is going wrong.

Clubs like Albion cannot afford to pay the wages some players think they are worth. That is why a low basic can be topped up by hige bonus payments. If the players do well they stand to benefit, not only from those bonus payments or the chance of higher basic should we get promoted, but also from being in a susseccfull team will bring them to the notice of bigger clubs.

How well the players do is very much in their own hands, or feet.
