Not the real one
"MY EYES WERE WITNESS TO THE SECOND COMING OF THE LORD
HE PLAYED FOR BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION AND HIS NAME WAS PETER WARD
DEFENDERS THEY WOULD FEAR HIM FOR THE GOALS THAT HE WOULD SCORE
AND THE STRIPES GO MARCHING ON ON ON !!!!!!!"

Now we all know the song but over recent years (Withdean years) I've been hearing a slighty different version and its driving me nuts every time I hear it.
the line that begins "Defenders they would fear him" has been replaced with "Defenders they all hate him".
Now which is it? The version I believe it is as written above is what I remember bellowing out at the Goldstone but did I get it wrong or have the words been replaced by people that used to murrmurr through that line when they didn't know what it was. I remember hearing at Gillingham " Defenders they murr murr Goals that he would score". Now has It changed over time or, as I suspect the people singing it in H block or at away games used to sit in the southstand(Goldstone) as kids and are now old enough to go in the big boys end and have changed the words as they never quite knew them before. When I tried at West Ham to correct one of them singing it, he said "Don't be stupid, your version don't make no sense". Well I think it does and it isn't as child like as singing their version.

Someone tell me what the real version is so I stop going mad when I hear it. Ta very much.

Tim Carder's very comprehensive guide to Albion songs quotes:

"Defenders tell in fear of the goals that he has scored"
And the stripes go marching on, on, on!"

Which I prefer to "hate him" - not least because it's more lyrical, somehow. But it's a long time since I've heard that version.

MY EYES WERE WITNESS TO THE SECOND COMING OF THE LORD

Ithought it was "my eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the lord"

could be wrong as Iwas only 13 when Wardy started terrorising the opposition &at my age your memory begins to fade!

Its not a religious hym! So what if you eyes have seen the glory of the lord? whats that got to do with Peter Ward?

So it is actually "fear" then according to Tim Carter and thats what I trust so all of you getting the words wrong and singing hate please stop it!

I've always sung...

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the lord
He played for Brighton and hove albion and his name was peter ward
Defenders they did fear(sometimes i sing 'all feared' instead of 'did fear'- it depends what comes into my head first) him for the goals he always scored
as the stripes go marching on on on

So its fear for me.

Why would you sing 'defenders they all hate him' when he doesn't play anymore?

It's an interesting question. How many songs have definitive lyrics?
