PC Music help

It is my wifes 60th birthday and I wanted to attempt something I had bever done before that was to sing her favourite song at her party, which she doesnt know about. The musical director of a well known star was going to help me but he has been called to help out 10cc so can not do it and suggested I played the backing tapes and sung to them to see how it sounds.

I have a microphone for my PC and I use Nero to download music. Is it possible to play the backing cd and sing to it and record it on the pc if so how do I do it.
