I guess the RAM may be faulty or the slot could be knackered?

Have you tried removing the old RAM and trying the new RAM in that slot because you know that one works. If it doesn't work it's the RAM. If it does stick the old RAM in the second slot and see if that works. If it doesn't it's the slot.

Then it's a new motherboard or a larger single stick in the working slot.

very, very unlikly to be the slot... is it exactly the same spec (including CL rating, either 2, 2.5 or 3) as the other RAM?

Where did you get the PC? Some motherboards will not support DDR Ram only the slower SDR. Check the one you have to see if it is the same speed and make sure it is also DDR and not SDR.

It's DDR, cos the one I have is DDR and it's exactly the same specs.

The PC is mail order from a company called Q-Tech

Now all sorted.

No idea what I was doing wrong, but the nice people at Maplins sorted it out, by putting the memory in and turning the PC on.

I feel stoopid :dunce:

You might not have pressed the RAM home enough. You haveto press it till it "clicks" it almost feels like you are going to break it.
