OT - Mobile Phone Shops?

Genuine question here. Why are there so many Mobile Phone Shops on the high street?

I know most people know have mobiles, I've had one 17yrs (scary), but in all that time I have never used a mobile phone shop. When I'm due an upgrade I call my provider and they send me a new phone the next day. The story is the same of many of my friends. Essentially it's a choice I only need to make every 18mths or so regardless of whether I pop into a shop or just research online.

Do these shops make any money, or are they subsidised by the networks? For example there is 5 of them on George Street, Hove where I live (outnumbered only by charity shops!). How can that many shops compete in such a small area?

They exist because they make money ! lots of it ! do you really think there would be so many around if they didn't ?

Worthing has loads too and even Bognor has most networks represented along about 200 yards of London Road.
