Doug Clarke tells the story in Keith Moon's biography when part of the Who entourage in the mid-70s.

The band were due to be playing a couple of gigs in West Berlin, and on a day off, they decided to head into East Berlin. So, they got to Checkpoint Charlie, shitting themselves a bit, and one by one they handed their passports and documents over, and are allowed through. They get to the end of the line where Doug and Keith Moon are waiting at the back of the queue. Doug handed his documents over and walked through. Moments later the alarm bells ring, the sirens go off, the lights start flashing and everyone is being held a gunpoint by the border guards.

A man in full length leather coat, trilby hat, not unlike Herr Flick, but a seriously menacing bastard with a couple of heavies walks past the entourage towards Doug, himself not having a clue what was going on. The top secret policeman walks straight up to Keith Moon, innocence personified with a tender cheeky smile on his face.

"You laugh at us Germans?"

"No, no. Not at all." replied Moon.

"You think we are stupid?"

"No, no."

"Then why did you do this to us?"

"Do what?"

"We ask you for your passport and you give us this?" Instead of his passport, he produces a copy of 'Hitler, My Part In His Downfall' by Spike Milligan.

Can't stand all The Sun-type jingoism surrounding this World Cup, but having said that, it was worth it for all the gratuitous Allo Allo references.

"Allo Nighthawk? Zis is London calling. Ze 'ens are in ze 'en 'ouse"
