Some great running in some shocking weather this weekend :)

And now some news from the Junior Park Run Front. Well, after being spoilt with a beautifully mellow late-summer, autumn certainly blew in with a vengeance this morning. The filthy weather led me to be fairly hopeful that the childen would want to give JPR a swerve but with their '50 Runs' wristbands just couple of events away, they were adamant they wanted to go, regardless. Despite of getting soaked, I'm glad we did as they were rewarded with some great results. My 8 year old son finished 5 overall and my 10 year old daughter grabbed her fourth 'first placed female' placing. Admittedly, a thinner field than normal due to the weather I guess, but still 60-ish runners and I'm pleased for them that their determination to get up and get out there was rewarded.

Absolutely brilliant. These tales fill me with genuine joy. I wish junior parkrun had existed when I was a nipper.

Some fine effforts all round from the NSC running collective.

From 5k to marathon this weekend, we’ve had a full array of times, pb’s and distances.

Very happy to have grabbed a much sought after gold medal at Barns Green today. It had eluded me for 3 years. First year finished 101st to miss out by a place. 2nd year finished 65th but they changed to only top 50 and this year finished 49th.

6 seconds slower than last year but the conditions were tougher, so reasonably pleased.

I tend to find my half marathon range by Brighton and Hastings. Barns Green & Worthing help me do this.

Next race Arena 80 for the showdown with Ninja Elephant bookies have me a wide 6/1 underdog which seems reasonable after his two back to back 5k PB’s.

Good to see you mate - brilliant that you got a gold. Very well played.

I didn't know Junior Park Run existed - I've not heard about it before. Just checked it out and there isn't one in Worthing, which might explain that.

What there is in Worthing is Kids Run Free. It's only once a month - the first Saturday morning of the month - and I'm a volunteer there. There's only a few of us that do it, but if we didn't then a whole loads of kids wouldn't be getting out running for fun. I love doing it, and it's been great to see some of the kids improve over the last couple of years or so.

My son comes with me and has done nearly every one - we only tend to miss them if we're on holiday. We even got AITC along a couple of months ago with Sally Seagull etc which was very well received.

...and chipping into a weekend of great running, whilst fully conceding that it's nothing compared to the achievements of others, I've just come back having run 10.2m - the furthest I've run since July 31st 2016.

It wasn't fast - I'm never going to be - averaging 8:38 miles, but I felt so comfortable throughout. I even pushed a bit on mile 10, which is all uphill, making it my fastest of the whole run at 7:46.

I’m not sure I would have done. I once got a detention for running a cross country too slowly. 1991 Longhill High School.

Junior Parkrun is absolutely fantastic but like you, I didn't know it existed until about this time last year when a teacher at my children's school who runs the after school Running Club suggested it to us. So I registered the children, printed the barcodes and we got up early and went along the next Sunday to see what it was all about and since then my kids haven't looked back. Apart from the odd 'miss' for birthday parties or sickness, they have been ever-presents at JPR, even insisting on seeking out the local JPR when we've been on holiday. So far they have run 48 events at 5 different courses across 4 different counties. But at their 'home' JPR they have made quite a few new friends (and rivals!) whom they would never have met before.

JPR are typically held on the same course as the regular PR but at 9am on Sundays and only over 2k, not 5k. But the whole course is marshalled, they are timed and results are uploaded to the website within an hour or so of the event. It is this 'gamification' that keeps my kids going back for more. They are always looking at their PBs, where they finished, where their rivals finished and are always busting a gut to improve. All I do is put them in the car, cheer them off and then drive them home afterwards. It is a brillaint initiative. But like you say, the footprint of JPR is not quite as broad as it's adult counterpart yet, so there are gaps. (We have to do a round trip of 50 miles to take part as our nearest PR doesn't have a Junior equivilant yet).

My kids love JPR and are now looking to get a few adult PRs under their belt on Saturdays, running with me. I keep trying to put them off as I know they'll end up dragging me round...but that time will be coming soon enough. I've been going through a particularly difficult time in my personal life just lately but I ensure that JPR remains sacrosanct in the weekly schedule, and for as long as the children want to do it, I'll be there to get them to the start line. It's the highpoint of my week.

Well done to the Barns Green gang, Guinness Boy, big nuts, Pondicherry (and welcome to the thread!) and Left Back - not to mention Simgull for his performance at the Warsaw Marathon in sunny Poland. Another strong week from the running gang!

I hope so - but you really never know until the start line!

I think that I'm a bit of an anomaly compared to others on the thread, I don't really taper as such. I won't run at particularly high tempo this week, but I'll do a 10-12 miler on wednesday or thursday, depending on how I feel. I felt a bit heavy today and the pace of the parkrun hasn't been the wisest thing before my long runs on a sunday. But I'm confident I'll be able to perform next sunday and we'll see how it goes.

My intention is to run the standard 7 miles easy tomorrow, tuesday will be a massively ramped down pace session to be determined after the run tomorrow. Wednesday will probably be 7 miles easy with the longer run on thursday and nothing on friday barring potentially a morning swim. Saturday will be my first non-parkrun for months but I will do 20/30 minutes at a steady pace. I've run 60 miles this week but have been averaging 50 for the last 4/5, it's also my 10th marathon and third of the year, so I've got a good sense of what works for me. I wouldn't recommend you have a schedule anything like mine this week, the work is done at this point and that last thing you want to do is go out on thursday for a 4/5 mile easy run and feel like it's all you can manage. Maranoia is just as strong for a Half. Definitely go to the club night and the thursday 5k sounds like a good idea to me - just enough to get your blood pumping and hopefully boost your confidence a bit.

That's interesting, I was reading about people that don't really taper their training and wondering how it would work. I'm feeling really sore tonight and really had to battle through 10 miles today with a bit of a calf niggle which is worrying me a bit. As you say, Maranoia might be playing its part and I'm feeling a little down on confidence (not about finishing but I really want to get close to 1:50 and will be a bit gutted if I can't at least get close).

Last time I went up the downs for a bit, plod came to watch through my Escort window, Christ it was TERRIFIC.

LOL.........have done a fair bit of night running on the Downs. Amazing how many cars are in the some of the car parks. Was manning an aid station for the SDW100 once at Clayton overnight (until 4am), had several cars coming into the car park after midnight with the occupants a bit surprised to find the place lit up like Blackpool pleasure beach, a big gazebo, tables of food and drink and random knackered runners in various states of distress scattered about [emoji23][emoji23]

Just in from ‘rehydrating’ thoroughly (beer/vodka mainly) after Warsaw marathon this morning. Really well organised event. Very pleased to finish in 3:53:25 and especially with splits of 1:56/1:57 despite finding the last five km a real grind.
Great efforts at Barns Green - missing this one - must do it again next year!

Top running, all.

I was out early yesterday and ran west so I could benefit from the following wind for the second half. The 14.4 miles left me just under six miles short of 100 for the month, so I had a go at a proper recovery run (zone 2 nearly the majority of the time) to hit the target. Amazing sunrise out there and perfect conditions after the weekend's wind and rain!

Ha! I was just looking at Strava and it says I've run 91.6 this month so I was just contemplating a very slow 5.5m plod with the dog early lunchtime before the forecast rains arrive, and then popping out this evening to top up to 100.

Flicking back, I've not had a 100+ mile month since July 2016 when I ran 236 miles. I wonder why I got injured around then?!?

I was out with the dog at sunrise, just for a walk, and it was stunning!

Absolutely beautiful sky this morning – fascinating to look at in detail as I ran towards it. I was out for the duration from darkness to full light so managed to snap away at various points throughout my run. As well as the actual sunrise, there were some weird colours going on in the west, which someone far more intelligent than me could explain!

The whole 'rounding up' thing is so strange – I guess it's more of a target for me than actual times/pace. I don't NEED to run 100 miles a month, but I have done for the past five or six, so I'd like to keep the streak going. No particular good or bad reason for it, other than I've not got it in my head that if it's within reach, I'll go and get it...

I’m sitting on the doorstep having just done 5.8 with the dog.

Rude not to, isn’t it?
