Is there such a thing?

Seems most I have managed to find have cables between the two speakers in a four speaker system and the only wireless bits are from one side of the room to the other. Both sets of speakers seem to need wires between them.

Any techies know better? Ideally I'd like wireless connections between all 4 speakers.

Thanks

Usually only the rear are wireless, and they both need to be connected to a mains adaptor anyway = more wires.

Yamaha's YSP800 or YSP900 is a decent, single-box alternative. Not cheap thugh.

A mate of mine was talking the other week about a surround sound system he bought recently from Richer Sounds for about £350 that has NO speakers, other than the main base unit itself. Apparently it doesn't need speakers to achieve surround sound - it just transmits the sound and "bounces" it off the walls.

Sounds like complete bollocks to me, frankly. But I'll be popping round his new gaff some time over Christmas so I'll have a little looky-looky-touchy-feely.

Is it ?
Does is actually work then ? Only I can't quite get my head round the concept of an audible sonar-type system bouncing the sound off walls. Surely its not as effective as a standard 5.1 system with actual speakers ?

Oooh.
If its that good, I might have to make an investment meself then. I'll check out my mates and report back with my findings in due course, if I remember.

Haven't heard it myself, but it's multi award-winning and has got 5/5 in every review I've seen, so it can't be too shabby.

Interesting. If that's the only one around that has no wires I'll have to have a listen.

Thanks

i have got one of the yamaha systems and i wouldnt swap it for the world it is very good for the money and only takes 5 mins to set up... and it has loads of differant settings from sports, movies to music and it does feel like there is sound comming of the walls but it is differant vibrations from the box its self.. very cleaver if you ask me

my rating 9.5/10

but surely the sound you get is TOTALLY dependent upon the shape of the room?

I have heard these units, and there are quite amazing. As for the shape of your room, the later models tune themselves to the shape of your room authomatically, the older ones you program yourself, not that tricky either. Very clever bits of kit, could do with an external subwoofer though.

I'm looking forward to having a demo of this Yamaha then. If its as good as the reports, it sounds well worth a sniff.

It's not one speaker - it's 23 speakers (and amplifiers) in one box.

Thanks, starting to think this could be the expensive answer, just need to hear it now and I reckon I'll have one if it lives up to the hype.

Best to go for one of the models that sets itself up, I believe you get a small microphone with the unit, plug it in and put it in the middle of the room and it does the rest for you.

"IntelliBeam Automated System Calibration" is what it is called.

That looks pretty good actually. I've wanted a surround system for ages but really don't want speakers and cables everywhere. Is it as good as a conventional surround system? How good is the bass?
