In, unless I go to a house party, I have had a couple of really excellent NYEs in Scotland and Austria...unfortunately those spent in England are generally crap, they used to be really good where I grew up, everyone put on fancy-dress and did a mini pub crawl round the village...however, it now seems obligatory for pubs to charge people to get in, you spend a year putting cash into their tills and they then repay your loyalty with charging you for the pleasure of drinking there at New Years...nice!
