This was Tony Hawks (Round Ireland With a Fridge and Playing the Moldovans at Tennis fame)- he went on to try and make another hit to prove he could do it again. It made for a very funny book called One Hit Wonderland.

EDIT: A trip to Wikipedia tells me that the lead singer of the band in question is called Oliver Bendt. Which explains the outfit, for a start off.
