Actually I think the Labour vote held up quite well! Given the news stories of the previoius week (and the hysterical over-reaction to some released prisoners who had committed the far worse crime of being foreign) I was expecting utter carnage. The North held up well.

Good to see the party of hyenas, grave-robbers, chancers, shysters and limp-wristed do-gooders (aka the Lib-Dems) had a bad night. All of England wants Falmer! Are you listening Lewes?

I thought it was very strange when they interviewed a chap in a pub and he said he will not vote for a major party again. He voted Green.

He wasn't happy with the way Labour had treated Cuba  Not quite a local issue really! But gives a useful insight into how the public may vote in the next General Election.

Honestly not as bad as I feared, we could have lost places like Hartlepool. It WAS bad though I'll grant you.

Of the 36% who voted only 26% voted Labour...

that's 9.4% of the electorate who actually voted Labour :nono:  :nono:

... that's opposed to the massive 14.4% that voted for the Tories.

Doesn't sound like much of a ringing endorsement to me.

we went to vote, as I think everyone should, it should be law that you have to

Its a conservative stronghold in Shoreham, although the Lib dems have had control of the council from time to time.

I had one look at the form and didn't consider any of the major parties to be worthy of my vote, so I voted Green.

even though I'm a petrol head

I wonder how long beofre enough people A actually bother voting, and B, vote against the major parties to the extent they have to sort themselves out.

Of those who voted (36%) only 7% voted for other than LIB/LAB/CON.

thanks Satsman ! ;) dissapointing isn't it, why are the voting public ( albeit a vast minority of the populus) so reluctant to voice their true opinions, or is it just that the general public are too stupid/complacent to care ?

The 26% vote for Labour is EXACTLY the same as the last local elections before the last general election, so is it that bad?

The Cabinet reshuffle is my main concern and the future of John Prescott!

It was also good to see that despite winning 13 new seats the BNP vote did not increase, so if they cant win votes now they never will.

Polls on Thursday reported that a lot of people don't actually know what services local authorities actually deliver.

The parties need to work together on this one. Our basic quality of life is delivewred locally: bins, schools, libraries, leisure facilities, parks. To me these are more important than wars, intrusions into foreign lands!

In addition what p***** me off was the Mp's just dismissing the local elections as "it doesn't make a difference".

Well to you arrongant sods it may not, but locally it could mean the difference, between schools, libraries closing, or lower taxes etc.

It also could also mean the difference to people loves and jobs.

I am still waiting for our area votes to be announced, we're in one of the labour real strongholds but I know they were fearful of Respect, the Greens but not the 5 or 6 socialist communist parties that like to stand here

One of the biggest problems is that it seems like a wasted vote.

With the current electoral system, we ended up with Blair in power, in a presidential-style, elected dictatorship, with just than 22% of the electorate who actually voted.

It is very difficult to have a vote that counts for anything for anyone other than the LIB/LAB/CON.

First time since 1979 !!

Heres to cuts in services which will be franchised out to India. At least it might wake Micheal Foster up to local peoples issues and stop him blindly towing the line from Tony Thatcher

Agree. Look at Denmark and Italy with 90% turnouts and proportional representation. The common line back from voters there is: our vote actually counts and we do elect people of our political choice!
