In answer to your question drips, iPod's are Apple's branded MP3 players which are by far and away the most popular.

They may not be the cheapest or best quality but they are the most talked about and most desirable. It is the iPod that gives you cred in the playground and regardless of their poor battery life and reported screen faults it is more than likely that you will have a very happy nipper on your hands if you provide him/her with a brand new iPod.

£135 will buy you a new iPod Nano which is incredibly slim and lightweight, holds 2gb worth of music (approx 500 songs) and has an impressive colour screen.

£65 will buy you the lower spec iPod shuffle which doesn't have a screen and comes with less memory (512mb) but it is even smaller than the nano and can be worn round the neck without being noticeable. It is also less desirable to thieves and will run on a single charge for over 12 hours.

At the other end of the scale there is the new 60gb iPod which is capable of video playback on its colour screen. It will cost you £300 though and the chances of it having a decent battery life are remote.

All iPods and almost all similar MP3 players will come with all the necessary leads and software you will need, as well as headphones and if you're lucky a carry case/belt clip.

One last thing to note however is if you decide to look at players other than the iPods be sure that they don't need Flash memory cards otherwise you will have to buy the memory seperately which is essentially unnecessary.

Happy iPod hunting

And a crying one when it either gets nicked or breaks, because endemic desirability comes at a price, and Apple's engineering is atrocious

In addiition, the PortalPlayer chips that are used in the iPod's are notorious for overheating and burning themselves out.

Well I must be the luckiest man in the WORLD then because the 4 mini ipods in our house have not given us a minute's trouble. The software works well, have had NO problems transferring both CDs and downloaded music to itunes (which has also given us NO trouble.

The only thing I would agree on it the standard of the supplied headphones. They are CACK.

Seconded - they sound cack and show up all the dirt from the tube. Until you are mugged.

Ive had my ipod for about 18 months now and besides the battery degradation, the only problem I had was when I accidentally synchronized my full ipod with an empty itunes.... cue gnashing of teeth as start the process of downloading all 300 of my cds via my steam powered laptop, again!

on the subject of mp3 players, i just bought a cheap and cheerful dixons own one which i put wmas on. the quality is fine and i'm well happy with it.
except that when i download stuff on, it always plays it in a completely different order so i get the 5 or 6 albums on there all jumbled up. anyone know why this and how i can avoid it?

The G2 section of todays Guardian has a feature on MP3 players. Go take a look if you want a second opinion.

Interesting to note that the iPod still comes out on top.

I'm seriously considering going for one of the new 60gb colour iPods so I can transfer most of my music collection across and take it with me everywhere I go. With an improved battery life and slimline form factor, can it be beaten?
