It got little plaudits when it was released and only got popular through d.v.d word of mouth. But how it can be described as "most overrated" or "baloney" is beyond me. It's a very good film and Frank Darabont is a very capable director. If you fancy it, I saw "Dude where's my car" was on special offer in tesco

Tesco you say ? Oh dear.
As for Darabont I fear he may have peaked when Re-writing The Fly 2 and The Blob. Dreadful stuff.

AN is a class above TDH.

If you think Apocalypse is self indulgent all that means is you only saw Deerhunter once, 20 years ago.

Platoon is still the daddy.

I would actually agree with you. I found AN very dissapointing. Platoon, Casualties of War, Full Metal Jacket, The Thin Red Line and Hamburger Hill were all superior films imo.

I think Platoon is the pick of the bunch there US. Full Metal Jacket didn,t join in the middle and although Kubrick undoubtably broke new ground on many occasions.... FMJ wasn't one of them.

Very average film. Coppella running wild with a self indulgent, wildly over budgeted piece which did nothing to convey the horrors of Vietnam like The Deerhunter did.

it wasnt trying to, just retold an older story in Vietnam setting.

Questions comes across as though he is very knowledgeable, although I have to profoundly disagree. His choices of films, for me, declare his love of the devoid, the abstract. In other words dialouge that he doesn't have to lend an ounce of intelligence to listen too appears to be irrelevant. I guess he would rate 12 angry men in the same bracket............Jeez

Absolutely! There's been a real parade of shit films this last week what with Shawshank, Full Metal Jacket and The Godfather.

And only the week before I had to 'tolerate' Goodfellas, Casino, Heat and The Godfather 2

That. As for Shawshank Redemption, it wasn't terrible but neither was it the skyscraping pinnacle of film-making some would have you believe it was. The book was miles better

For those of you talking about the vietnam war experience, ie how horrible it was, how many of you were actually there? If I was a professional producer and director of films I would definately make sure I knew what any veteran or historians point of view was before I shot it. So we can all think our fav film maker is great or we can crap the rest, just depends on your point of view and your intellectual capacity. Yes it's a dig

Well, my favourite film of all time is Milos Forman's One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest. A rare occasion when a great book is bettered by the film although to be fair it was based on the play of the book and that is why you get those lovely set scenes that Kesey never really emphasised in his novel.

Goodfellows and both the Godfather films are cinemagraphic masterpieces. Casino and Heat are not.

An intellectual film, wow

Hither (sometimes Thither)
It's up there with a Coldplay album, for me, as something decidedly grey and unspectacular and self-satisfied. Quality doesn't usually mean everybody liking it. That normally makes something boringly average that you could sit through but live life without a speck of inspiration from. I don't hate it, but certainly wouldn't go back to watch it again and wouldn't have it in my top 1000 films. Much prefer to watch Cool Hand Luke and Un Prophete again for a prison drama, or even a few episodes of Cell Block H.

I'm not sure I get your point. Must be my limited intellectual capacity.
