To be fair, with the players in the squad, I think the English media are slightly more justified than usual in predicting a very decent showing.

I think the team have always been intimidated in the past by the reputations of certain other sides- usually Germany, Brazil & Argentina.

But even though it was a friendly, the Argentina result a couple of months back does seem to have given the team some belief, and I think the midfield in particular are in the position of not being in awe of the giants of the game. They respect them, but hopefully don't fear them any more.

So on paper, we have a very good side, a potentially outstanding one if Rooney was fit.

But worry not, Scots, never underestimate England's ability to f**k up royally on the grand stage! We'll probably go out in the first round

:lolol:

PS can you Scots please tell Gordon Brown to stop grovelling for English votes and act like a proper Scotsman- ie announce proudly that he hopes England get battered and return home in shame?

Way out west
At least when England crash out it is usually against the likes of Germany, Brazil or Argentina and some way beyond the opening group stage.

England, having qualified, have failed to get past the group stages only twice. In 1950, when we got knocked out by Spain, and 1958, where we got knocked by USSR in a play-off.

Apart from that, we got knocked out by
1954 Uruguay
1962 Brazil
1970 West Germany
1982 West Germany
1986 Argentina
1990 West Germany
1998 Argentina
2002 Brazil

If you're going that far back, has anyone mentioned 1961?

ENGLAND 9
SCOTLAND 3

Marvellous scenes.

Favourite Scotland results ever.....
1967 England 2, Scotland 3. Yes, Scotland embarrassed the World Champions at home. That one was hilarious, with Jim Baxter thoroughly taking the piss out of England's defenders, playing keepy-uppy along the touchline.
How about the last competitive game at Wembley in the much-missed Home Internationals? 0-1 to Scotland with a John Robertson penalty. The English FA had banned ALL Scottish fans from the match, but I was there and so were at least 70,000 Scots fans. And no, kids, I'm not kidding.

I rather enjoyed the Jocks defeat to Morroco last time they actually managed to qualify for a tournament in 1998.

It was not a real shock that the Sweaties lost, more amusing was that they really did believe that this would be the tournament they got to the knock out stages and all they had to do was win, but they royally screwed it up.

Yep when we got knocked out in 1982 we hadnt actually lost a game. Just the fact we were in a mini group in the Qtr Finals with W Germany and Spain I think.

If only Keegan bagged that free header...

I can't believe the scots let this thread get so far without mentioning this result.

Seeing as they brought it up, does that mean we can mention 1966?:clap2: :clap2: :clap2:

The 1950 USA game was a World Cup finals game and it is right up there with the greatest 'shocks' like Cameroon - Argentina etc.

Got to be Costa Rica, made all the better by walking to school with my Scots best mate the day after. Sadly, the bastard was a Notts County fans, so had his revenge just one year later....
