I believe if you leave for an injury you should be allowed back on at the ref's discretion (i.e. during play as long as you're not giving them some advantage letting them on where they're stood), if you leave to have equipment sorted you have to wait until the next break in play before letting a player back on. In this instance it was both. There was a similar instance last season with Bridcutt leading to a lot of fans going mad, but a week or two before it happened in a televised premier league match so I was aware of that weird nuance.
