Mark Wright Profile
by John Harding
Player ProfileMark Wright was born on August 1st, 1963 in Dorchester, Oxfordshire, and started his career with Oxford United

More detailsMark Wright was born on August 1st, 1963 in Dorchester, Oxfordshire, and started his career with Oxford United, signing professional forms during the 1980-81 season. A good leader and talker at the back, Wright was comfortable at bringing the ball out of defence and setting up attacks. He also chipped in with some memorable goals down the years. After only 11 appearances, the outstanding young defender was transferred to First Division Southampton for £80,000 in March 1982.

During the 1983-1984 Wright's performances helped the Saints to a creditable runner-up spot to champions Liverpool. Somewhat surprisingly, in August 1987 Southampton accepted an offer for Mark of £760,000 from Derby County, a then club record breaking fee. So, after 222 appearances for the Saints in which he scored and 11 goals, Mark moved to the Baseball Ground. He played 171 times for Derby scoring ten goals before joining Graeme Souness’ Liverpool on the 15th July 1991 for £2.5 million. Mark was a regular until his retirement on the 1st August 1998 at the age of 35 and, during his time at Anfield, he captained the side to the 1992 FA Cup final in which they beat Sunderland 2-0. He eventually made 210 appearances for the Reds, scoring nine goals. Mark ended up with 45 England caps and was one of England's stars at Italia 1990 as they reached the semi finals.

To the tune of 'Oh What a Night'

Oh Marky Wright
Came to us from The Dons on a free
From midfield, goes on a scoring spree
For the Albion... Marky Wright

I'm dreaming of a Wright goalfest
Just like that bloke Zamora did
With the treetops swinging
And the South Stand singing
to push the seagulls up the league

Wright Goals
(Pure as driven snow)
Going in the net
(He'll win those one on one's baby)

Wright Scores
(Another don't you know)
And he'll set them up
(puts on their head's baby)

He's something like a phenomenon
