Mansfield Town's pre-season friendly away at Ilkeston FC was abandoned by Stags boss Paul Cox after three of his players were more or less assaulted during the game by Ilkeston striker Gary Ricketts, John Thompson suffered worst with facial wounds that required over 50 stitches in hospital, he'll now miss at least a month of the new season. Ilkeston this morning suspended Ricketts.

Sweet Jesus, he's nearly taken his nose clean off. Thugs like this should be banned for years. But footballers seem to get away with stuff like this

It could have been a lot worse, not that the poor bloke in the picture got off lightly you understand.

If so, it sounds crazy that he was still on the field of play to be able to inflict the damage shown in that photo

Not a sine die offence however, unfortunately.

We used to have a complete nutter in the Sussex County League that actually hit someone with a spade or something similar two or three years back... he never got a sine die or arrested!

That's GBH of the highest order, subject to the fact if the pictures are genuine, I have a legal friend wetting his lips with this incident and is in touch with the clubs and players concerned

Ilkeston (which BTW is pronounced Ilker-ston with the stress on the first syllable) is one of those small edge-of-Derbyshire towns with a bit of a reputation in these parts. This sort of thing is quite common outside pubs after closing time but it's sad to see it migrate to the football grounds.
