Go to Bruges instead. They have lots of canals, water taxis and nice places to stay. All that with Belgium beer and Belgium chocolates and far cheaper.

True Bruges was very agreeable a few years back.

But Venice is the most beautiful city on earth? And there's no traffic?

If you are thinking about going here....

...you are in the wrong city

Try

instead. If you are in Venice its much easier to find. Don't eat or drink there though - its terribly expensive.

however if you want to impress the Missus take her to Harry's bar for a bellini, or two.

They've been married for 20 years. I think the opportunity to impress has long since passed..... :lolol:

One of the alarming things you first spot is how many of the towers ( like the one up above in St marks) are actually on the piss.

The one at Burano ( one of the islands) is heading towards a 45% angle

Only the Italians could build huge towers on inherrantly unstable land.

The Campanile

The 99m-tall Campanile di San Marco (St. Mark's Bell Tower) was built in the 9th century as lighthouse and tower to sight enemy fleets. Modifications were made in the 12th and 16th centuries and it the reached the present appearance in 1514 by Bartolomeo Bon.

The Campanile di San Marco received historic visitors (among them Galileo who showed in 1609 his famous telescope to the doge).

It collapsed on July 14, 1902 at about 10am, because of wrong repairs that caused structural changes. The collapse was anticipated and the area cleared, so there where no human casualities. The Basilica was barely scratched by bricks and the Libreria Sansoviniana lost just its corner-wall.

It was rebuilt "dov'era e com'era" (where it was and how it was).

A decade later, on St. Mark's Day 1912, the new tower was opened.
