Sussex's Luke Wright smashes Aussie T20 century record

Sussex's Luke Wright set a new record for the fastest century in Australia's Big Bash Twenty20 competition with a brilliant innings in Tasmania.

Wright reached his hundred off only 44 balls for Melbourne Stars as they beat Hobart Hurricanes by 19 runs.

The 26-year-old was finally out for 117 off 60 deliveries, after hitting nine sixes and eight fours. Wright is playing in the competition to try to boost his chances of a recall to England's limited-overs squad.

He has played 46 one-day internationals and 30 Twenty20 matches for the national team, the most recent against Sri Lanka last June.

Wright and Rob Quiney shared an opening stand of 172 in just 16.4 overs after Melbourne skipper Cameron White won the toss and opted to bat first. They were dismissed in successive overs by former Sussex seamer Rana Naved but the Stars still reached 203-3 from their 20 overs.

Travis Birt (51 off 23) and Essex and England's Owais Shah (55 off 37) did their best to try to keep the Hurricanes up with the required rate but James Faulkner took 4-46 and veteran Shane Warne chipped in with two wickets as they were all out for 184.

Useful nudge for the selectors. He was part of England's victorious twenty/20 team after all.
