It needs a complete makeover.

I have always thought it would be an ideal destination for a string of bars and nightclubs.

Certainly has the potential, at one end is the North Laine and at the other is Circus Circus and the wonderful Duke of Yorks so it has the staritng points, just need to fill in the (shit) bit in the middle.

It needs a vigilante group to go wandering down there and kicking in every alchy ne'er-do-well filthy scumbag until they piss off back to the Whitgift Centre

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

London does smell a bit, always reminds me of a mixture of puke/drainage and people that do not wash.

I also like the fact those free papers are everywhere on the floor and they go on about being green. Get rid of the f***ing things.

How is it ignorant to point out that London Road is a shitheap (and have a bit of a joke in the course of so doing)?

My question is, where do all the crutch-yielding, baseball cap wearing low lifes who inhabit London Road come from? They can't all come from the Albion Hill flats. Do they bus them in from every social housing project in East Sussex? Why do they flock to Londinium Road like lemmings?

I heard they were turning it into a super massive Tesco?

No, a load of people decided to protest about Tesco ruining such a "wonderful" part of Brighton so they pulled out. I'm not a big fan of Tesco taking over the country but look at the place, any kind of regeneration has got to be good.

I think there's a place around there that dishes out methadone and it is also where Brighton Housing Trust has their HQ...

No it was always good for a drink London Road if you had the stomach. You will never see the like of The Northern again in central Brighton.

Plenty of pubs like the Rose Hill within a syringes throw of London Road that are class.

I worked in The Northern as a barman in the summer of 79. :smokin:

So bad, Sainsburys relocated about 150 metres away, in the new posh bit behind ???

They like to think of the 'New England Quarter' (as it has been labelled) being posh but it is in fact a soulless characterless urban desert devoid of any identity and with a few blocks of badly designed trendy flats for Londoners. And all within a syringes throw (robbed that quote from an earlier post but it is so apt) of the ugliest building in Brighton that houses the oxymoronic Substance Misuse Centre where you can pick up your methodone or subutex script and then pop downstairs to the underground car-park to score your £20 bag of brown!. All in all a piss drenched smelly drug addled weeping boil of a location that would be infinitely improved by a swarm of bulldozers on full destruction mode.

With prose like that you should be writing for a living, not feeling collars! Top wordsmithing!

* Disclaimer - although you should be aware that you'll never succeed in becoming a published novelist in this country unless your fictional character is a non-white female involved in either a tale of domestic abuse or fleeing a war zone and currently living in London *

I used to work in there, full of some right characters but never had to sort anyone out, the locals would do it for you.

Nothin wrong with London Road that a nice bit of pedestrianisation couldn't cure. Seems to me the council rarely invests a bean in the place. There's some really decent shops (Sony Centre, Richer Sounds, Maplins, Johns Camping etc etc) dotted in between the charity shops. Wouldn't take a lot to pull it up by its bootstraps. But that needs investment from the council in partnership with developers. Massive potential in London Road that will hopefully come to fruition one day.

Back in the day both London Road and the OLD Churchill Square were both THE places to go and shop...

Totally agree - it was always a big deal to go and do the 'big shop' at London Rd [Lewes Rd being the 'little shop'. Parked at the Co-Op car park just by Rose Hill Terrace and then walked round to the Open Market, sometimes stopping off for a trim/butchering at Andrew Cooper's.

Then down to the Co-Op itself accessing the Toy Dept via the carpets - can't go into a carpet shop without thinking of Santas grotto and the Co-Op toys.

Along to Fine Fare for the weekly shop [later graduating to 'Tesco' at the back of Churchill Square] and if Mum was feeling posh and flushed into 'Forfars' for a 'sit-down' ham sandwich. Then a mooch in Diplomat and if we were feeling really sassy or needed school uniform, down to Potters Outfitters.

Then, catching the No.6 opposite the Level - it only came on the hour and was invariably late but Mum had a trick to make it turn up. She'd always light up and it seemed her trick would always work.

Great days and I'm now welling up thinking about my Mum.
