Not at all. I'll do what I've always done. Train from Lewes to East Croydon; change for a train to London Bridge; walk to one of the excellent pubs nearby; have a bevvy or two; walk back to London Bridge station; train to the game.

What is it about all you Brightonians? There's a rail NETWORK out there that is easy to use.

One spin-off of all this work at London Bridge will be a much better network that will, for example, allow travellers from south of London going to places on the East Coast mainline to change at Peterborough, instead of having to endure the hell that is crossing London by Underground to Kings Cross.

And isn't there now an entrance to Blackfriars station SOUTH of the river?

ALL CHANGE AT LONDON BRIDGE

Network Rail’s proposal for a major redevelopment of London Bridge station has been awarded formal planning consent.

The decision means that from 2018 over 90m passengers a year - a 35m increase - will be able to travel through a brand new, state-of-the-art railway station.

The plans are part of the second stage of the Thameslink programme to unlock much needed capacity on London’s rail network, and allow more services to travel to and through the capital.

By changing the way the station works for passengers and the community, the redevelopment will remove a critical railway bottleneck as well as creating better pedestrian connectivity between Tooley Street and St Thomas Street.

Network Rail’s chief executive David Higgins said: “Our work will see the transformation of one of London’s oldest and highly congested railway terminus. The London Bridge project is a critical part of the £6bn Thameslink Programme. It is only by remodeling London Bridge station that we can allow the new fleet of 12-car trains to operate at a metro-frequency on the Thameslink route. The project will also cover over 46 miles of new track laid in the 4.3 mile approach to the station.

“As well as bringing a better rail service to Southwark, we hope that the construction programme itself will help support the local community. How we build is as important as what we build and we are committed to a number of schemes such as local employment, supply chains and community engagement as well as setting up a workplace diversity and inclusion plan.”

New street-level entrances on Tooley Street and St Thomas Street, as well as a permanent 24-hour pedestrian walkway through Stainer Street, will create better connectivity with strong links across the station linking north and south. This further supports the role that the station plays in bringing regeneration to Southwark.

I've already addressed the East Croydon suggestion.

One spin-off of all this work at London Bridge will be a much better network that will, for example, allow travellers from south of London going to places on the East Coast mainline to change at Peterborough, instead of having to endure the hell that is crossing London by Underground to Kings Cross.

I can already do that by getting a train straight from Preston Park to St Pancras International and the walk to Kings X or Euston.

About time they upgraded that pathetic excuse for a station from about the 1950s. It runs to a timetable that seems to assume that only a few straggler workaholics would want a proper train after about 18:15. Its left to the good people of Sussex to fight for oxygen with half the population of Croydon on the seriously shitty Thameslink trains after that. And the only bogs are an ill-designed portacabin on platform 5. Everything about that station sucks. sooner they knock it down and start again, the better. IMHO, like.

This is a good point. The new Bankside entrance to Blackfriars station is a short step along Blackfriars Road from Southwark tube station, providing an alternative way onto the Jubilee line for Canary Wharf commuters who don't fancy changing at both East Croydon and London Bridge.

No doubt both Sourthern and First Capital Connect will be reducing annual season ticket prices for the duration of the works to reflect the increased travel times.

About as likely as Vicente starting on Friday.

Are we going to be able to get direct trains from Brighton to Nottingham, Sheffield and Leeds after these improvements? It really should be possible as its effectively the same line.

The current (2011) plans for Thameslink services seem to be:-

Brighton - Bedford: 4 trains per hour;
Three Bridges - Peterborough: 2 trains per hour;
Horsham - Cambridge: 2 trains per hour;
East Grinstead - Bedford: 2 trains per peak hour;
Caterham - St Albans: 2 trains per hour;
Tattenham Corner - Welwyn Garden City: 2 trains per hour;
Tunbridge Wells - Bedford: 2 trains per peak hour;
Ashford International - Luton: 2 trains per peak hour;
Maidstone East - Welwyn Garden City: 2 trains per hour;
Sevenoaks - Luton: 2 trains per hour;
Bellingham - St Albans: 2 trains per hour.

From what I remember, the interior of the Blackfriar pub is ASTOUNDING!

It's still very impressive. Few problems with the pub though.

It's Nicholsons so the beer can be very hit and miss at times.

It's a managed house and the manager seems to change every couple of months which in turn a knock on effect on the quality of staff. You certainly don't want to in there when it's busy if you are thirsty.

It smells! Particularly outside the drains chuck up something rotten.

Finally because of it's interior it's a bit of a tourist trap and they are a f***ing nightmare to get stuck behind at the bar.

This looks like its going to prove a bit of a nightmare , i have to be at bishopsgate for 7am every morning, its bad enough doing it from london bridge but blackfriars , city thameslink or victoria would make it a prohibitively early start, i know its not supposed to be until 2014 , but i hope i dont have to move back to london again, or dare i say it, croydon!
