CITY ARE SHIRTY OVER REF

Bristol City's defenders last night blasted referee Richard Beeby for the penalty that ended their promotion dream.

In a scrappy Division Two play-off final the incident proved decisive as Brighton ran out 1-0 winners at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.
Matthew Hill and Louis Carey both claimed that goalscorer Leon Knight fouled Danny Coles in the build-up to the foul by Coles on Chris Iwelumo.

Hill said: "We could see that Leon Knight had tugged Danny Coles' shirt but the referee hasn't seen it. He has given the penalty afterwards and we feel hardly done by, but there wasn't a shot from either side really and it was the penalty that decided it.

"We thought it was a stone-cold free-kick before the penalty. Yes Colesy did catch him afterwards, but it has gone now and we just have to get on with it. Both teams didn't have a chance on goal and after a poor penalty and a bit of luck for them they have gone through."

Right-back Carey added: "From what I did see it was a definite pull on Colesy and that was the reason why he struggled clear on the first ball.

"Perhaps Colesy then did catch him (Iwelumo) a touch, although he did make a meal of it. But it was definitely a foul on Colesy before the actual penalty came about."

Hill and Carey are two of several City first teamers now out of contract. But Hill is sure the current side is good enough to take an automatic promotion spot next term.

He said: "We have one of the best defensive records in the League and the gaffer has added (Liverpool youngster) Stephen Gillespie to the squad and Scotty Murray, so if we keep Tony Rougier and the like, we have good players who can push us on next season.

"We have got a step further than last season and maybe we will go another step further and do what QPR did this season
