Local Elections 2006

With the local elections almost opun us,and looking at the local Stoke-on-Trent paper,both UKIP and the BNP are both well represented. With any form of mid-term election often seen as a protest vote? Could you vote for any of the above parties? To be honest,there have been times i have voted in such elections for The Greens or UKIP.

Even more surprising is that people vote labour, conservative and lib dem. Actually, they don't, they just make up the number according to which party has paid the most.

I would never even think about voting for the UKIP or BNP, their core views go against pretty much everything I believe in or would want for this country. I wonder where they stand on ID cards as I think that might become the biggest election issue in the next few years.

UKIP and (especially) the BNP hate the country I was born in and live in. I'm proud of this great country of ours, so I despise those who hate it. They'll never get my vote. It would indeed be interesting to hear how they stand on ID cards - both trumpet the rhetoric of personal freedom against an overbearing state, but both are in their natures corporatist. I'm assuming they will be like most of the post-Thatcherite right in Britain - shouting freedom while promoting greater state control.

Up here we have additional serious parties to vote for: the SSP (on the left) and the SNP (on the left or right depending on who the candidate is and who the current leadership are). At the very least, voting for them can help in screwing over Labour ruling majorities, which is always a pleasurable exercise. And at least they provide genuine opposition to Labour, particularly intellectually, unlike the Tories or the LibDems.

In my ward we only have the choice of the big 3 so for the 1st time ever Im not voting as all of them care mnore about £ notes than people - my abstention is my protest against this capatailist nightmare we live in

I haven't even seen a flyer from any of the political parties, despite the fact that I have already received my polling card, so I am clueless to who is standing or what they are promising. It will be the first local election since I moved to Gloucester so I am interested to find out what issues each party is campaigning on, my vote will go to the one that promises to rid the city of speed bumps and look at other forms of traffic control. Any party that promises to tackle the anti-social behaviour that is ruining a pleasant neighbourhood will also get my attention.

We are as solid Labour as it gets. Our interest is sustained to see if one of the various Communist or other Socialist parties beat the Liberals or Tories!

Weird you should say that. I feel that - as a general rule - greens in rural areas are Tories with a conscience (if you excuse the paradox), whereas greens in towns and cities are generally left-wing in thought and outlook. There's been no hard and fast research gone into that, more a case of seeing who wears the Barbour and wellies, and who wears the sandals.

I wonder if rural and urban Green Party members actually get on with each other?

I have never voted in my life despite making out on here at times that I am a right wing nutter, however I have a Lib Dem councillor where I live Broadwater, and if I vote and that is a big if I will not vote for that poxy party, so who do I vote for Labour thats a waste of time in Worthing, Conservative maybe just to try keep out the Lib Dem nonce.

I dont think there is an Independent, and yes my punctuation is crap, cant be bothered most of the time.
