Thought this might interest some statto geek types on here:

1st:
2009/2010: 95
2008/2009: 96
2007/2008: 92
2006/2007: 91
2005/2006: 82
Average: 91.2

2nd:
2009/2010: 86
2008/2009: 89
2007/2008: 82
2006/2007: 85
2005/2006: 79
Average: 84.2

3rd:
2009/2010: 85
2008/2009: 87
2007/2008: 80
2006/2007: 83
2005/2006: 76
Average: 82.2

4th:
2009/2010: 84
2008/2009: 84
2007/2008: 80
2006/2007: 82
2005/2006: 73
Average: 80.6

5th:
2009/2010: 82
2008/2009: 82
2007/2008: 76
2006/2007: 79
2005/2006: 72
Average: 78.2

6th:
2009/2010: 80
2008/2009: 76
2007/2008: 76
2006/2007: 75
2005/2006: 71
Average: 75.6

So by my thinking we've pretty much nailed the bottom two and the average for 4th. two more wins by laws of average could be enough to see us up via automatic?

Nice.

This also means that the ave. points difference between 1st and 2nd over the last 5 years is 7 points. We are on track to beat that - i wonder what the biggest points difference between finishing 1st and 2nd is in league 1.

Way out west
Look at Luton in 04/05, promoted as champions, now currently residing in the BSBP...and having just dispensed with their manager!

It's amazing (and quite comforting) to think that with just two more wins we will already be well over the average points for second place. We really are pretty much there aren't we!

Southampton will win the championship with 72 points and just refuse to accept our existence.

christ, two more points would put us level on points with the winners of the 2005/2006 season

We already know before tonight that 12 points from the last 27 guarentees promotion, and 16 guarentees us the title. That is assuming that Huddersfield, Peterborough and Southampton win all of their remaining games, which I don't think they can because I'm sure one or two of them play each other, so it's possibly less than that.

Top 5, highest points scorers in third tier history:

1999 - Fulham - 101
2003 - Wigan - 100
2005 - Luton - 98
1987 - Bournemouth - 97
2009 - Leicester - 96

Top 5, highest 3rd place point scorers:

1993 - Port Vale - 89
1987 - Swindon - 87
2009 - MK Dons - 87
1990 - Notts Co - 87
1985 - Hull - 87

So two wins and two more draws and it would be very odd if we didnt go up!

Additionally, our current 80 points, puts us as the 4th highest point scoring Albion team ever.

Albion record points:

2001 - 92
2002 - 90
1988 - 84
2004 - 77

Additionally our lowest ever goals conceeded is 34 (1985/1923), so if we conceed 6 or less goals in the last 9 we will have the best Albion defence ever.

Our lowest ever defeats is 6, so if we avoid defeat, we'll have the fewest defeats for an Albion side ever.

Our most ever wins is 29 (1956). So 6 wins from the last 9 would give us the most wins in a season, in our history.
