Skipper Chris Adams led the way with a century on a high-scoring opening day for Sussex against Lancashire, the team favoured to depose them as champions.
The visitors eased to 458-9 at stumps at Old Trafford, with Adams hitting an unbeaten 145, a knock including 15 fours and four sixes.
His 41st first-class century was supplemented by half-centuries to Ian Ward, Murray Goodwin and Matt Prior.
Dominic Cork (3-85) and Sajid Mahmood (3-102) were the hosts' best bowlers.
