Key for me, compare their averages.

I think it's unfair to compare averages between these two. Firstly, Butcher has played far more tests so it's hard to change the bad start he had. Secondly, Key never had to play in the time when we were the worst team in the world. England are currently blessed with one of the best coaches in the world with Fletcher. Since he came in, I think you'll see Butcher's average is in the high-40's. But before that he was in low 20's. He's actually done very well to get it up to 34.

So what you are saying is that although Key may be able to score big in the county game that he hasn't got what it takes to make the step up and will be a bit part player throughout his test career?
