Kerry Mayo Retires!

Brighton Legend Retires

Sadly, former Brighton stalwart Kerry Mayo has been forced to retire from the game due to ongoing groin problems.

The 31-year-old, who made 367 appearances for the Seagulls during 14 years of loyal service, was released by Albion last summer but was offered a one-year-deal to sign for Port Vale.

However, Mayo was told that his groin injury required further surgery and that would mean a minimum of another nine months on the sidelines.

Speaking exclusively to Givemefootball’s Mark Shail, Mayo said: “I had both hernias operated on last season and I managed to get through games by taking anti-inflammatory tablets and having injections.

“But this summer the problem has got worse and my pubic bone just gets inflamed every time I try to run. I’ve tried to do some fitness work during the off-season but every time I’ve gone for a run I have had to stop because it just flares up.

“The specialist said I would require another graft to try and repair the problem and that would probably mean me being out for the whole season. I just didn’t want to have to go through any more operations so, reluctantly; I decided it was time to quit.

“I had a one-year deal from Port Vale on the table but I had to ring them to tell them the news. I’ve been feeling it for a long time and the pain has just become excruciating – I just feel like an old man trying to get out of bed.”

Mayo added: “I’ve had a good career, 14 years at Brighton, and now I’ve got to look forward to the next chapter in my life. I’d like to go into coaching, I’ve already got some of my badges, but we’ll just have to see what happens.

“A friend of mine has also got a buildings insurance company selling to pub landlords with freehold properties and there’s a chance I could help him with that.”

"my pubic bone just gets inflamed every time I try to run"

I have that problem but I think it's just because my nylon gym shorts are too tight and I always make a beeline for the fit women in the gym.

Poor 'ol Kerry. Trying to sell insurance to the pub trade sounds horribly like joining the rat race with the rest of us. And his mate got a new contract just to rub salt in the wound.

Good luck Ginger Prince (for those with long memories - thanks for the good times). And welcome to the real world.
