I'm with you on this Edna, Why? I have wiki'd it and can't see the relevance to sport.

Apparently the guy who was most famous for waving it at sporting events became so devout, he took two people hostage in a hotel room where he holed up, awaiting the Rapture, and is now serving a number of life sentences for kidnapping.

Right, I get what John 3:16 is, but why do people wave it at sporting events? I don't understand the relevance. You used to see it at downhill ski races all the time on Ski Sunday.

No relevance to sport, particularly - but the view I'd assume was that waving the Bible reference in front of a large TV audience might encourage someone to look it up and benefit from it. Same reason you see any cause/placard/slogan at a televised event.
