But I seem to recall the film explained that Moore's West Ham contract ran out at the end of June 1966, which is why he had to re register.

i think the point is the rules have probably changed following Bosman. before that, if you weren't registered you were in effect not a professional player. post Bosman that is not the case, your club registration doesnt define your professional status.
