Leeds win race to sign Beckford
Kevin Blackwell will continue his talent search in the lower leagues Leeds have beaten off a host of clubs to sign striker Jermaine Beckford from non-league Wealdstone.
The 22-year-old has scored 35 goals in 40 games for the Ryman Premier League outfit this season and the clubs have agreed an undisclosed fee. Manager Kevin Blackwell told the club's website: "It's nearly done and we are delighted to have signed Jermaine."
Southampton, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Watford were all linked with a move for the centre forward.
Blackwell admitted that chairman Ken Bates was keen to mine the lower leagues for talent.
He said: "The chairman thinks there are one or two nuggets in the lower leagues and he wants us to try to tap into that resource as much as possible."
