"It's just like Barcelona v Chelsea"

Is it just me or docommentators and pundits at the moment constantly compare matches to “Chelsea v Barcelona.” It’s beginning to wind me up. Whenever a team sits back for even a short while, or when a team begins to dominate and maintain possession in their opponents third, commentators immediately reach for the Chelsea v Barca example. I’ve heard some sort of comparison trotted out in the Russia, Denmark and Ireland games over the past few days, and now Patrice Evra has said the same about England.

First of all its a lazy comparison: There are many different types of rearguard action, and to bundle them all under one banner is misleading. Chelsea went to Barcelona with a game plan, and when you’re under the kosh and defending heroically (against a better team) for ten minutes in a match that’s not the same.

I know the CL semi was a pretty spectacular match, and understand how it could have come to define a type of match – I just reckon it’s already being overused, and in the wrong context. And it’s winding me up, a bit. But the tournament is still brilliant so far.

I agree though, can't believe 'play like Chelsea' has become a thing, it should be 'play effectively to your abilities, and to combat the tactics of your opponent to give yourselves the best chance of getting a result'.

Winds me up to, in fact the whole commentary/punditry thing on both BBC and ITV has so far wound me up because they are shit awful. I can't remember a tournament with such puerile shite in my life as we have in this one. In fact it has ruined my tournament experience so far.

As for Evra, the racist inciting little f***... someone needs to give him a bloody good hiding, but then he is French and arrogance is seemingly inbred.

It was absolutely nothing like Chelsea v Barcelona, Evra's just being an idiot. As usual, the French think they are better than they are. I can see England and Ukraine qualifying from that group.

As for the punditry, if I hear one more mention of the 'enigmatic' Ibrahimovic....

Like LondonBlue, the coverage is driving me nuts. I tend to just watch the games themselves and avoid all the previews, half-time borefests and post-match 'analysis'.

I'd argue the phrase isn't being used enough.

The analogy - of something being repeatedly pounded or put under pressure - is extremely versatile, e.g.

"I'm off with stress - work's like Barcelona vs Chelsea at the moment"
"I shagged the arse off her, it was like Barcelona vs Chelsea in the back of my Escort!"
"The kids are jumping all over the furniture, it's like Barcelona vs Chelsea in there!"
