Was watching the Ainsley Harriott "Who do you think you are" last night. Tracing his family back to a white slaver in Jamaica (but that's by the by).

They were explaining that there was a social hierarchy based on colour, with White at the top, and then getting blacker it went (I think) Quadroon, Mulatto and Sambo, with Sambo meaning the blackest. I didn't realise until that time that this is where the term came from. Apparently Sambo is not a racist term in the West Indies. Fascinating...or not!
