Air used to be free in the good old days. All you had to worry about was the glare from the person in the kiosk if you didn't buy anything.

Still free in the French petrol stations as I had to top up there the week before last.

... than waiting to put some air in your tyres at a petrol station only for the person ahead of you to drive off, leaving you to use the rest of their credit?

I'm not a driver, so not qualified to comment.
But I can think of at least 3 feelings that should be significantly better than that..
