It was designed that way to aid drainage and possibly (not sure about this one) to get the ball pushed easier to the wings as requested by Gus

Or, as I was reliably informed yesterday after the tour - it's according to FA recommendation (or was it requirement).

I suggested it was the reason why the ball always goes over the bar into row Z, when a player hits it in a straight line - which was hilarious, everybody thought so.
