Out of interest, who "owns" the video recordings that would be used as evidence?

The home club? The TV company? Certainly not the away club, so couldn't Saturday's game have led to the possibility of "accidentally losing" evidence?

The more factors you introduce, the more there is that can go wrong!

The officials got it wrong and had to follow through having got it wrong (the sending off) whereas a word from the 5th official and nobody else would need to know about it, you wouldn't call the ref over to see the replay.
The man in the middle would still have the final word but no way would that ref have given a pen if somebody had told him it was defo outside.

It would also cut down on dissent if the ref could tell players that his decisions were being backed up by TV evidence.

No, the officials got it right.

The sending off was an automtic red card which, under Law 12, can only be given for the following
1. Is guilty of serious foul play
2. Is guilty of violent conduct
3. Spits at an opponent or any other person
4. Denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal scoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area.)
5. Denies an obvious goal scoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player's goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick.
6. Uses offensive, abusive or insulting language, and/or gestures.
7. Receives a second caution in the same match
8. Use of the elbow

I suggest it was given for highlighted sixth option.
