Hi all

Now I want to put an Ipod on my Santa wish list.

Easy..but I know nothing about Ipods or MP3's.

Ideally I would like to have about 100 cds of music on it.

I would also want top notch headphones so that the entire train carriage cannot hear me listen to Girls aloud or Steps or Abba.

Any recommendations and how much should I pay?- I have a new Pc with 160 Gbs will this hold 100 cds?

Cheers and thanks

Don't get an iPod if you want decent headphones, because if you do, you'll need to buy new headphones (it comes with utter cack)

I'd suggest an iRiver iHP-series player for small size, extremely good (Sennheiser) earphones, and ease of use.

100 full CD's will easily fit in 160GB, a lot less in fact. A 60 or 80GB player will hold that and have space for future acquisitions.

Thank you...where do you buy iRiver stuff?

Pretty much any electrical shop - as many places as sell iPods here have them. Dixons and Currys for sure, although they'll be over priced.

I reckon your thigh-high star-spangled glittery platform boots will probably give you away anyway BB.

On reflection you are spot-on there Easy. The Daniel O' Donnell Roadie tour jacket raises some sniggers already.

As a guide for storage space, I have 3,500 songs (over 300 albums?) on my 15GB ipod.

And, although my Ipod is super, the battery is getting silly and I might well plump for and iriver or zen next (as long as I dont need to download all my cds again).

How heavily compressed? Theres no point compressing audio to bejaysus just to get more tracks on a player.

BTW, if you used the defaults in iTunes, you'll need to get a player that supports AAC, as it compresses to that and not mp3.

I think the whole caboodle is in AAC which could be a pain in the @ss if I change...

As for the compression - good question. I'll have a look tonight. I think it was just the default level, but can't be sure (I've not added any songs for about 6 months).

I've got a Creative Zen, 20gb, £147 from Comet online I think it was. Its great. Battery life good and easy to use.

I've got 101 albums, or 1413 songs, and still got about 13.5gb left.

No idea if that's of any use to you!

I love it when I sound clever...

AAC is like an ipod only version of MP3, which will play on anything (even ipods, strangely).

With MP3 players, as long as you stick to a name you have heard of, you'll be OK (i.e. don't buy some Korean brand 1GB mp3 player for £15 from comet coz it will only last about a month...). With MP3 players, you pretty much get what you pay for (but with ipods, allow a premium for style).

Actually, there is another brand of player that plays AAC's, just not the ones you buy off iTunes, I'm not sure which one it is though. But the iPod is pretty much the only player that uses anything but mp3 as default

I found some Sony MDR EX71 headphones on the tube once, sort of things you actually plug right into your ear, they might be called buds. They were great, fantastic bass which I love, I like it when I can feel my brain shake, so when the ones I found died, I got some new ones to go with the creative player. They are about £25. I tried the Creative ones that came with the player and they did seem pretty crap.

I have read a good review somewhere of the Sennheiser plug-in-your-ear type headphones that MYOB mentioned, and I think they were only about £15. Couldn't find them in the shops though.

Had my iPod just under a year and now having to send it back as the battery has gone utter CACK. Luckily, still in warranty. But they really can have a whole lot of problems with them especially in the battery. For once MOYB's apple-bashing seems justified. Great to use product, but reliabilty-wise it's shocking. Although IMO still great value for money.
