Keep the statts coming, glad there are a few of us working out all the scenrios "on pen and paper"

Football chat on a football forum ....no yawns here !!

Regarding the thread, it can still happen. I can certainly see a couple of our rivals keeping up their good form of recent weeks.

We just need to get the points on the board early as possible. Would hate to go into Hudds and S'ton games having to win to keep in our hands

What a tasty game though- to play Saints at home knowing a win would give us the title!

Take that. What I meant was a scenario where we are caught and have a chance to drop out the top 2.

If us and Saints are going for the title and its a winner takes all or at least a winner in the driving seat then bring it on.

We didn't play well down there but they still couldn't score and we could of nicked it with the pen.

We will beat them down here whatever the scenario. Best in the league us !

...ie if from now on, we average just 1 point per game, whilst all the other potential six teams average 2, the table would finish thus;

Southampton 85
Peterborough 84
Brighton 83
Huddersfield 83
Bournemouth 81
MK Dons 79
Leyton O 79

What are the chances of that happening eh?
We would have to collapse dramatically.
Not going to happen, Shirley?

Thats how it finished when I did that BBC predictor thingy. :down:
I won't be doing it again.

The trouble is when I do the predictor for some reason I am ultra-pessimistic and predict defeats to Oldham, Rochdale, Walsall, Sheff Wed, SCC, and Huddersfield.

However, for SCC, Huddersfield and Peterborough I view similar matches as very easy wins.

We still finish 3rd :(

Just musing on all the what-ifs and how likely it is that we could suffer such a catastrophic downturn in form.

Charlton have clearly set the standard in how it can be done, after beating Peterborough quite impressively then losing at home to midtable Exeter, Brentford and Carlisle; drawing with a desperately out of form Tranmere; and losing away at midtable Hartlepool and Notts Co with only MK Dons being a game they might have expected to struggle against.

Dispiritingly the cast of characters in their demise reads awfully similarly to our list of forthcoming fixtures and could even be thought to be easier.

OLDHAM away are next up after falling from grace in recent weeks and seemingly lost all hope. Which of course makes them very dangerous indeed. Since thrashing Hartlepool at the beginning of february they have drawn with Dagenham and lost against Carlisle, Peterboro (0-5) and Sheffield Wednesday. Their away form is even worse but they have shown they can score goals they have had seven blanks in their last ten games. It is hard to see them improving too much on that form and very hard to see worse than a draw even if we play poorly as we did at Orient and MKDons when we were expected to perform and failed to do so. ONE POINT

NOTTS CO at home could be a tough proposition as their cup form has shown although they are not too consistent in the league as their position shows. Still a false position based on ability surely? In their last five games they have had a narrow home win against Charlton and a narrow defeat (0-1)against free-scoring Peterboro but on their travels have a defeat to Orient, a draw at Brentford, and a win at Wednesday. Not a high scoring game in prospect so if we dip in form let's assume a draw as being realistic (ONE POINT)

SWINDON TOWN at home and a side with the perrenial saviour of lost causes at the helm but it isn't happening so far so will that change over the next two weeks? Recent away form includes defeats at Bournemouth, Orient, Colchester, Southampton and Plymouth with Huddersfield still to come. Six goals in their last 14 games is a clear indication of the problem and despite missing Gordon Greer their defensive record really isn't too bad. Expect to see Hart pack his midfield and defence but no matter what it's hard to see beyond a home win here (THREE POINTS)

We have DAGENHAM away and at home over the next few weeks. Games in hand at the bottom mean they have every chance of making a break for the relative safety of lower mid table and although Bas Savage is back to his non-prolific best this season, both Vincelot and Nurse have been scoring and will need to be watched closely. In their last 4 home games they have beaten Colchester and Yeovil, drawn with Huddersfield and lost narrowly to Bournemouth, while on their travels they have drawn at Oldham and Swindon, lost narrowly at Walsall and won 2-0 at Bristol. Strong recent form and they score in more games than not and haven't lost heavily since the autumn. Two draws then to continue our dip in form? (TWO POINTS)

Following our away trip to Daggers is the journey north to ROCHDALE and a reunion with Liam Dickinson who has failed to score at any of his three clubs this season. Is it an omen? After an exceptional start to the season they have fallen away to mid table. Recent home wins against Bristol and Sheffield were followed by a bad defeat against MKD and a narrow loss to Exeter while away from home they are draw specialists. They can and do score goals and their defence is reasonable so on a good day we might be looking to draw but on a poor run of form this could be another defeat (NO POINTS)

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY and the sniff of revenge in the air but they have six games before they come to Withdean and, purely on the law of averages, the chance for Megson to finally begin to make an impact? Their form is mercurial between bad and very bad with little relief in recent weeks but they expect new loan signings and things must surely pick up sometime if they are to avoid the unthinkable and slip further towards the relegation zone. If the game was tomorrow you would give us the points and save them a journey but given time let's go for the draw. (ONE POINT)

The final game before the first BIG match against the south coast club is away to WALSALL. An improvement in form inspired by a managerial change seems to be dissipating a little although their level of form is generally higgher than in early season and they are no walkovers. Matt Richards will be looking to give his usual solid display against us and in recent weeks they have beaten the SCC 1-0 after being hammered all game, and also Dagenham. Defeats though against Orient and Bournemouth and a draw with Rochdale highlight there problem in scoring goals. Indeed so desperate were they for a goalscorer that they also tried Liam Dickinson but they soon got rid and have signed Emanuel Ledesma instead. He was unlucky not to score at the weekend and could make a difference. A draw (ONE POINT)

So that's it. Relegation form leading up to the SCC game and we will possibly have only garnered 9 points from 8 games giving us a total of 80 points with just four games remaining. On that form we would be holding on to a play-off place and you would have to say that our chances would have realistically gone.

So yes it could happen. But will it? Individually any of those results is realistic but collectively? I think not.

My money is on us dropping a couple of points at Rochdale and at home to Notts County and winning the rest which means 91 points going in to the south coast derby and just one point for the magical "two per game". If that happens we will already be promoted and almost certainly already be champions. I'm sure Nigel Adkins wouldn't begrudge us a guard of honour.

I've just done the BBC prediction thing and we win the league by 1 point ahead of Peterborough who have a pretty easy run in.

Jumped on the bandwagon and did the predictor thing, just so I have a clue what everyone is talking about!!!

I finished with

SCC=90
HUDDS= 86
PBORO=85

Still had us winning the league with 96 tho, which included being abit generous to the pack and tight with us!!!
