Soon it'll be May again so they can ransack some McDonald's in London.

as well they should. send out a reminder that a corporation who employs people on minimum wage, forces out of business independent retailers, and poisons our children maybe shouldn't be a ubiquitous hegemony.

nobody ever is, i'm afraid swiss. the case boils down to the fact that in the most part humans are selfish, greedy, inconsiderate kunts. and sadly no amount of leftist argument from a better-educated, more tolerant and morally superior position is going to change these people's minds.

when the cash register starts ch-chinging, attention is lost.

You're right of course. Thats why I got out of politics. No point getting into the discussion. Tell em something new and they hate you for it...Off on Sunday for a 4 week coarse in eco village design. Temporary relief from the insanity around us...

based on what swissseagull is going off to do, I should probably point out that I've been to the CAT in Wales loads of times and I'm right now using a recycled tyre mousemat from there. I don't associate it with being a swampy, though...

Don't you think that attitude (the assumption that because you believe passionately in something it follows that you are "better-educated, more tolerant and morally superior") is one reason why the protestors get so disliked?

Clearly we all need to think about climate-change and flying. But we all fly (most of us) so who is that should stop flying? And who's going to decide who's not allowed to go abroad by plane on holiday any more? The runway isn't meaningless (whether or not it's right). Predictions are that demand for air travel will more than double to 490 million journeys by 2030 - there isn't the runway space for this at the moment.

So protestors need a coherent. logical position setting out how they're going to limit people's right to fly (a limit that operates world-wide, not just in this country). I haven't heard any of them do yet.

When do we want it? Now

I bet you are a larf a minute on a Friday night.

We could always spend the billions for more terminals and runways on improving fast cheap and reliable trains to the continent so reducing the anticipated 500% rise (or whatever it was) to a less damaging amount?

As for the soap dodging aspect of the thread, some of the smelliest people I have ever met have been sitting next to me on aeroplanes!!!

I read somewhere that the Methane produced by, mostly cattle but also pigs, sheep etc. contains more greenhouse gasses than are produced, per year, by all the cars and planes put together.
If that's true they should be picketing burger bars and butchers, not airports.

I am suspicious that one of the motivations is another few weeks or months on benefit among like minded spongers and if challenged, can trot out the old crap about " I was trying to save the planet" shit.
No you were not, you just wanted to avoid payed employment for as long as possible.

So can we assume that all these protestors, are carbon neutral and have never flown in a plane?

I have a lot of sympathy with swissseagull's view, although as he well knows not all the people who go on these protests are paragons of eco-virtue. A lot of those stinking vans are NOT burning recycled chip fat.

However if all the people who SAID they cared about the environment stopped flying there would be no need to build the extra runway.

Oh I totally agree. I said IF you cared about the environment. You are at least honest; quite a few other people, not just on here, say: "Oh it's terrible what we're doing to the planet, we really must do something!" And then add: "By the way where are you going on holiday this year? We're off to Australia."

I find the comment about the protester's children being uneducated amusing. If it is uneducation your are looking for then just read this thread...or this site.
