Genre? My kids have got various different styles: Ninja, Star Wars, Dwarves etc. and we had this problem a few weeks back...
didn't come to any answer tho.
And there is something about the sound of being-sorted-through Lego.

We bought a job lot of loads of bits of lego. They are now sorted into boxes of wheels, bricks and other. The reality is that we have had the stuff for a year and my wife spent more time dorting it out than the boys have playing with it - I think the complete lack of instructions is an important part of that.

Brick type if you want your kids to be engineers, colour if you want them to be artists.

So brick type, as no-one wants the latter...

I'd actually suggest Brick type. but then again, perhaps putting the bricks in a completely random order will help the little fellas organizational skills... Make him search for that one small red brick he desperately needs to complete his castle...

Glad you asked?

It depends what containers you have to store it it. Preferably a variety of sizes, and clear plastic so you can see what's in which container (unless you intend labelling them).

I would then sort by brick type as follows:

- a box for base plates
- a box for common 4x2 bricks
- a box for common 3x2 bricks
- a box for common 2x2 bricks
- a box for any single rows bricks
- a box for the thin flat ones
- a box for special bricks (ones with printing one or very unusual shapes)
- a box fo people
- a box for wheels / bogeys / battery packs etc...
- a box for trees / animals
- a box for any instruction manuals

You may need one or two other 'special' boxes if you have any major sets like a zoo / farm / train set / Star Wars etc to accomodate.

Ideally you will have kept the original packing for these, and any smaller models, and ensure that each box has its complete complement of pieces and instructions.

EXCELLENT suggestions people.

In the past I have always opted for the COLOUR option but I am now wondering if the BRICK TYPE method may be better.

He's got LOADS of old sets that need sorting out and also loads of old loose bricks, including some of the Lego I had when I was his age.

Father Christmas will be bringing him some more (apparently) so the help of NSC is, as always, gratefully received.

Sort by brick type definitely.

And throw away any of those stupid pieces that are a special shape for the specific model you are making with a token dimple at the top, that's not proper Lego it's cheating!
