How Much For Falmer Stadium Rights?

All the understandable uproar on Tyneside about the lovely Mr Ashley re-naming St james' Park reminded me that there was not to my recollection an annoucement as to how much we recd for Falmer being 'named' as The Amex.

Can anyone shed any light on this subject?

I work at Amex and I heard £4m for 4/5 years, 5 years I think it was. Just hearsay and cannot be confirmed as 100% factual.

At the risk of being fixtured, I found this on page 68 of the Argus yesterday:

“[American Express] signed a ten-year £4.5m deal with Albion for the stadium naming rights.”First time a figure has been mentioned? I haven’t seen this anywhere previously.


The agreement, which will formally be announced today, has been heralded as a “great deal for the club, the company and the city”.

The move means the stadium, which is expected to be dubbed “The Amex”, will be used as a hub for community learning and engagement.

The club would not confirm how long the deal was for or how much it was worth.

The 22,500-seater stadium will officially be named today ahead of its opening in summer 2011.

Albion chairman Tony Bloom, who funded the stadium, said: “This is a landmark deal.

“We are very proud our fabulous new stadium and to have such a prestigious global brand prepared to put its name to it shows just how good it is.

“American Express is committed to the local community and is the perfect partner for us. I would like to thank them for their suppor

In these days of UEFA's Financial Fair Play, it seems a little strange that nobody knows for sure publicly how much the deal is worth over what length of period.

as no one has any real idea im going to jump in where I have seen something, on football manager 2012 (great source )
its has it as 3 year deal £1.66 MIL a season until 2014 for stadium name rights which is prob about right so for the 3 seasons it would be the 5mil sum people are hearing.
2 year deal 175K a season until 2013 for main shirt sponser (brighton & hove jobs)
7 year deal 50k a season until 2013 for additional shirt sponcer (donatello)

So £4,500,000 over 10 years. 25 games a year (say), that works out at £18,000 per game for the naming rights. Think of how many times the word "Amex" or the phrase "American Express" is used in all the national newspapers and on the sports channels. That doesn't include all the multitude of conventions, parties, concerts and all the other times the stadium is talked about, creating a general awareness and presumably benefiting American Express somewhat?

So £18,000 per game approximately...is that a fair price?

Correct - whatever the figure was - all the money went to AITC. Nice gesture by Mr Bloom I assume which doesn't get publicised very much.

The question raised was not a snipe as mentioned by somebody, but more of a question of player funding.

According to the lovely Mr Ashley on Tyneside, stadium rights are the only way he can fund his club's ambitions. Now we all know what a prat he is but it does raise a small question, particularly in light of Gus saying publicly that he wants more money for players next season.

If the money has all gone to AITC that is a wonderful gesture by Mr Bloom, but if that is the case why does hardly anybody know about it.

I think it was widely reported at the time. The truth is the Club do a lot of work through AITC rarely gets written about.
