How long should tyres last?

Anybody up on cars.....
We have had a car 1 year, the car is only 2 years old bought from a reputeable dealer in Worthing. Tyres appeared good on purchase. My wife (careful lady driver) generally drives short journeys, I do the longer ones...(furthest = New Forest)We probably have done less than 5000 miles easilly this year.
We have just spent 270 on 2 tyres and tracking today as the guy that was sent to pick it up would not drive it untill it was done!!!It was going for a service in Worthing.
The car is a C Max, no bumps and my wife does not tend to park on kerbs.

Is this common with C Max's (last one we had 3 years possibly 2 tyres only) What is the usual time/miles tou would expect tyres to last?

Were they inflated to the correct pressure ? Under or over-inflated tyres will erode more quickly.
(and £270 sounds like a maHOOOsive amount to spend on two tyres !)

We do check the pressures quite regulary (once every month or two maybe..)

I know its a bit after the event, however SETYRES who are next to the Fire Station on Old Shoreham Road just before the Apple Shop we have always used and I just replaced all 4 Megane tyres with Micheline's and it cost £245. they have always beeen good for us and would recommend them highly.

I had mine replaced after 44,000 miles!!!

When driving formula 1, replace every 20 laps, or earlier if the weather changes.

If driving a regular car sedately over well-maintained roads and making no sudden starts or stops - you can probably go longer than 20 laps.

They must have seen her coming then. £270 for a couple of tyres (assuming its not a big f***-off 4x4) is RIDICULOUSLY expensive. Must have been Pirelli's or something ?

I'm sure last time I bought a couple of tyres I paid about £90.

depends on brand, way you drive, condition of the roads etc. some last a few k, some 15k. I have Toyo Proxies (softish, boy racer types) and they are still pukka after 5k+ miles (so i must be driving like a saint).

"Looking good" on purchase doesnt mean they weren't half gone. the mention of tracking though suggests the problem, someone have done a nasty kerbing, knocked it out and im betting you've scrubbed one wheel or the inside/outside edge badly. or as Easy suggests, not had the right pressure.

and yeah, £270 is OUTRAGEOUS price for two tyres. isn't tracking about £25. I would go back and complain or check that you got the right bill.

I think some of these garages see people coming. I know a couple of people at work that paid 500.00 quid for 4 new tyres to be fitted.

I said to them that's expensive. Reply was, garage man suggested we have these tyres.

I'm glad I spent some time trying to fix my old cars, because its taught me not to get ripped off.

In future I would shop around.

I have a Mazda 5 diesel which is a similar type vehicle to the Cmax, bought at 3000 miles and needed 4 new tyres at 12,000 miles which completely pissed me off. In particular the wear at the rear was uneven.

I went to Discount Tyres in Worthing Discount Tyre Direct - Performance Tyre and Computer Geometry Alignment Specialist and paid a large sum of cash for 4 tyres, plus a full balancing service. the net result was that at 30,000 miles I needed 2 new front tyres.

Points to note mini MPVs are hard on tyres
Diesels are particularly hard on front tyres, due to the engine weight
Proper balancing and tracking increased my tyre life by 50% at the front and a lot more at the back.
Discount tyres knew what they were talking about and I would recommend you check them out, if your problem continues.

I got 4 new tyres in January on my taxi from Chessington Tyres in Lancing. £260 I think.

Still plenty of tread left on them.

as some posts say, c-max are very hard on tyres, esp diesels. 270 is a good price if you've got 17 inch wheels, however if you are on 16s (2055516) that is a bit pricey (i have got some michelins on nsc classified for 40 each - obviously need fitting at approx 15 each somewhere!). being a c-max you will need rear pads at around 40k miles as the off side rear inner pad in particular wears very heavily indeed, and if not seen at service you will end up needing discs as well (approx £140 extra). KF have their reputation for good reason, however as also suggested on here setyres/chessingtons/discount tyres in worthing are about the best independants locally, but for the best deal i think you'd get would be at portslade auto care (i think) - he's a mate of superphil and also a mad brighton fan! unfortunately when you buy a new(ish) car the dealers never tell you that a particular model is prone to excessive tyre wear. if you want some free advice on state of your tyres in future feel free to pm me (i have just left the tyre/fast fit trade after around 15 years to look after my poorly mrs).
