Just imagine Hart had been criticising Ipswich supporters; he might have said something like "you boys should go off and drive your tractors". Then suppose Hawsey didn't realise their catchment area was largely agricultural; he still might have said "what's your reaction to that, tractor boys?"
The point is that he may have suspected the term was derogatory without knowing its origin, and transposed it from verb to noun to emphasize that he recognized that an insult had just been made, and that it needed addressing.
