Strong U21s squad named
Friday, 01 October 2004.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
England Under-21 coach Peter Taylor has named his 23-man party to face Wales and Azerbaijan in the European Championship qualifiers next week.

The squad come into the game on a high following two impressive away victories against Austria and Poland last month.

There are no major changes, though Brighton defender Adam Hinshelwood does come into the squad for the first time.

Carlton Cole and Darren Bent, who scored all five of England’s goals in the last double-header will be looking to continue their current hot streak but, with the game against Wales being played at Ewood Park, Blackburn striker Jon Stead will be desperate to represent his country in front of his home fans.

Portsmouth’s Gary O’Neil, who captained the side last month, is likely to hold the midfield with Jermaine Pennant, James Milner and Stewart Downing providing a wealth of attacking options down the flank.

The England Senior coaching staff have been particularly impressed with Pennant’s performances for Peter Taylor so far.

At the back, Leeds’ Scott Carson is the first choice goalkeeper at the moment while Tottenham’s new signing Calum Davenport (now on-loan at West Ham) is an imposing figure at centre-half.

England look particularly strong at right back where both Nicky Hunt and Glen Johnson will be vying for the nod from Taylor.

The manager himself is looking forward to the games. "This group of players set their own standards," he told us after he’d named the squad.

"They are a very ambitious set of lads with the talent to go as far as they want.

"I’ve enjoyed working with them so far and we’re all looking forward to our first competitive action on home turf when we play Wales next Friday.

"No one is forgetting the game against Azerbaijan but if we could get a good result in front of an inspirational crowd at Ewood Park, it will set us up perfectly.

"There were nearly 30,000 fans at Ewood Park the last time the England Under-21s came to Blackburn so let's hope the fans will turn out in force again to cheer us on and create a great atmosphere."

Harding AND Hinshelwood? Bloody hell, what does Virgo have to do to get in the squad? Anyway, well done Adam.

I think he's too old! He's 22 in a few months time. But is there still an overage player allowed in the team - or is that no longer the case?

Hisnh, Harding deserve it.

It will be harder for Virgo, not because he hasnt got the skill, but because CB has alot of competition.

He's playing out of position. He's not on a par with the U21 strikers I wouldn't have thought and isn't getting the chance to demonstrate his skills in defence.

Adam Hinshelwood has been called into the England under-21 squad for European Championship Qualifiers against Wales and Azerbaijan.

Under-21 boss Peter Taylor has called on Hinshelwood after West Ham United defender Anton Ferdinand pulled out through injury.

Hinshelwood has been in impressive form this season, playing at right-back and midfield, and joins fellow Albion defensive team-mate Dan Harding in the squad. England's under-21s will tackle Wales on Friday 8th October at Blackburn's Ewood Park and before travelling to Azerbaijan for the match on the following Tuesday.

Mark McGhee said, "We're absolutely delighted that Adam has been called. It represents such a turnaround for him after his disappointment of being out of the team last year. From the club's point of view to have two players in the under-21 squad is superb."
