Fantastic. I mean, sorry about the Japanese fella. But Henry Allingham deserves to be better known, not only because he's very old but because of being such truly class act.

and if im correct, the only living person to have a Brighton bus named after him

I believe so, although I think Micky and Bobby had their names put on one temporarily after we won Division Three.

On a Henry Allingham note, I have utter respect for the bloke given what he has seen and lived through, here's to many more happy years for him.

I thought there was a Des Lynham one and a Norman Cook one?

That had me wondering too. The bus company's website sez:

"In May 1999, the promoters of Brighton Marina's Walk of Fame suggested that some of the celebrities being honoured in paving stones in the Marina could also have a bus named after them. For a few years single deck buses on the Metro 7 route to the Marina each carried a local celebrity name included in the Walk of Fame but this practice ceased when those buses were sold."

His biography on Wikipedia is stunning.

He lived on his own until he was 110. He is a Freeman of the Town of Eastbourne, a Freeman of the City of Brighton & Hove, a Freeman of the Town of Saint Omer. He has been awarded the Légion d'honneur, British War Medal, Victory Medal and the Gold Medal of Saint-Omer.

He puts his longevity down to "cigarettes, whisky and wild, wild women — and a good sense of humour"

It's slightly morbid of me but whenever I see gatherings of WW2 veterans I wonder who will be 'their' Henry Allingham or Harry Patch, i.e the last survivors keeping the memory alive. After all even 15 years ago Patch and Allingham were unknown nationally; they were simply old men, part of a dwindling but still relatively numerous band.

I wonder if he supports the Albion? Would be great to have him as the guest of honour at a match so we could all show our appreciation to him :clap2:
