Help for a fishing novice !

Well my 9 year old son has just announced he'd love me to take him fishing during the school holidays. I've never done any serious fishing so have no idea where to start.

Should I take him fishing at a fishing "pond" ( see, I don't even know the correct words ! ) like the one in Arundel ( just off the roundabout towards Chichester ) or should I go to the marina ?

Can I hire fishing rods / lines /tackle from anywhere ? Or should I buy something cheap from Ebay or Argos ?

Any hints / tips ? Obviously I'm keen that he has the best chance of actually catching something !

Definately take him to a pond. sea fishing is rubbish, his first trip out you want to make sure he catches something and the sea is a lot bigger than a pond so he has far more chance of catching!!! The cheap sets from argos are much better than they used to be so for £25 you can probably kit him out with everything you need. Best tip would be make sure you buy some maggots from a local fishing tackle shop - you will catch anything on the pond on maggots, while you are there they will give you some good tips on where to go too. Tight lines!!!!

Im a sea man myself, but for someone just starting out I would maybe go pond fishing as its a little easier, a good place would be here Passie's Pond Home .

for a first fishing trip try a mackerel boat trip from the marina. rods tackle ect is included in price probably the best option for a first trip . beach fishing these days requires the Patience of a saint and some skill at casting. fishing from the marina arms or shoreham harbour arms is ok you will probably catch something
for lake fishing gear cheap try aldi. If you intend to go lake fishing get yourself off to a lake on your own first and just go up and ask someone for very simple tips and just watch for an hour or so you will soon pick it up
PS lake fishing requires a lot more gear and dont forget a licence

I take my littlens a fair bit because they both love it, My boy has a cheap rod and real which we picked up at a carboot sale for about two quid, My daughter has the end of a rod with a bit of line on we go to Orchard farm in Outwood, really qiute cost fiver a day per rod, there are lots of carp and the two of them catch loads, my daughter with her makeshift rod always seem to catch the most though

First time for a 9 year old kid, make it easy for him and go to a nice calm pond/lake.
The cheap Argos kits are pretty naff however it's probably the best move as there's a fair chance he won't take a further interest.
As far as bait goes, you can get the proper stuff (worms, squid & shrimp) which will work. However what will work just as well is a couple of raw sausages or chicken leftovers which will be a bit less grim for the kid to be twisting around the hooks.
Also, pick up a bright float so the kid can always keep track of where his line/bait is.

Argos should do the trick for some tackle, and I would recomend a trip to Passies Pond at Steyning/Coombes.

The have 3 lakes, one which is for Children, guaranted to catch as well

If you decide to go Sea Fishing go to the tackle shop at Brighton Marina or Prime Angling in Worthing for good advice. Best places for someone starting out would be either Brighton Marina or Worthing Pier, plenty of small fish to keep the interest plus always a chance of something bigger.

If you decide to go "puddle fishing" there was a notice in Prime Anglings window about coaching youngsters at Passies Pond , think it was free but not sure if its finished or when its planned as i dont do that sort of fishing.

Just a quick thank you to all that offered advice. Today we spent a glorious 4 hours plus at Passie's. £8.50 for a whip and 25 fish caught. A very happy little boy who now has a new hobby !

If you mean Chalk springs at Arundel, that is a fly fishing venue, where you will need specialist gear, I would suggest you look at somewhere where u can buy a day ticket something like here i just googled day ticket fishing venues came up with th link below.

Passies is great - my son loves to fish and I love going up there with him and sitting watching him. Another great place is Swanborough over near Kingston we have had some great days up there too!!!

thanks for the advice anyway. As it happens we spent some time discussing where we're going next and in all likelihood it will indeed be mackerel fishing from the marina.
