This is ridiculous. You can't live next to a football club and complain because the game has gone into extra time.

Email the Mid Sussex Times and The Argus and complain. Not quite sure what good that will do but never mind.

Football club's penalty in floodlight dilemma

A struggling football club has been fined more than £3,000 for failing to turn its floodlights off on time.

Burgess Hill Town Football Club was punished for breaching council planning orders six times.

Club director Gary Croydon admitted failing to comply with lighting restrictions set out by Mid Sussex District Council and the club was fined £3,100 and ordered to pay £558 costs.

A residents' association complained about light pollution after the club failed to to turn off its lights at the Leylands Park ground six times between April to August last season before the 9.45pm deadline.

Horsham Magistrates Court yesterday heard breaches of Mid Sussex District Council's planning regulations were often inevitable when matches overrun into extra time during flood-lit evening games.

The club could also lose vital business from other teams if it stuck to the rigid deadlines or be forced to move grounds, the court heard.

Burgess Hill FC relies on visiting clubs for income and professional clubs demand time to wind down after evening matches.

Iain O'Donnell, the club's solicitor said a change of grounds might be the only solution because the rising club - now in Southern Rymans division 1 - could not afford more costly court hearings.

Denise Cooper, prosecuting, said use of the ground's four floodlights should have been limited from 2.45pm to 5.30pm on Saturdays and 6.45pm to 9.30pm on weekdays.

The weekday deadline would be extended to 9.45pm, if a game went into extra time.

Mr O'Donnell told magistrates that games at the ground had to start at a set time and extra time was at least double the 15 minutes stated in the Mid Sussex District Council conditions.

Mr Croydon said outside the court the club would repeat a council application to extend the floodlight deadline.

He said: "We are struggling to compete at the level we are in.

"Financially, we are victims of our own success."

anyone else fed up of the "i moved in next to a football ground but cant hack it when, god forbid they use it for said purpose brigade." quite simply they can f*** right off. you made your bed now lie in it.
Surely the rules are quite simple- YOU NOTICED THE FOOTBALL GROUND, YOU SAW IT HAD FLOODLIGHTS, YOU STILL BROUGHT THE HOUSE!!!!!!!!
This sort of thing makes my blood boil.

I loved living near the Goldstone. Even when I had to miss matches for one reason or another I could hear the singing from the house.

Light Pollution! Like it. Burgess Hill must have agreed to these regulations at some point so must share a bit of the blame. Having the lights on for extra time yet only agreeing to 15 minutes is a bit daft.

Unfortunately the law is on their side. Even if you move to a nuisance (in the legal sense of the word) and even if a decision in your favour financially affects organisations or even results in job losses etc. then legally it doesn't matter.

I do agree that in this situation it is stupid though.

That's outrageous!!

As others have said - if you live near a football ground, you knew perfectly well what it would be like. Some people ...

Unfortunately the area around Leylands Park is a bit of a Chavs estate. Probably complained because little Billy and his mate Gaz can be seen scratching the Cortina's and Escorts with the floodlights on.

I agree with the points above about the local Nimbys!

Also looking forward to the scrap between Kinky and Scarface and Arthur.

Hold up. looks like Surrey has joined Kinky's side!

Blunkett and Blair have just dreamed up an even better way of getting back at anti-social football supporters...

Get Burgess Hill Town Council to issue fixed penalty notices to fans attending these games that run over time.

From the Home Office web site:-

"The Government also plans to extend the role of parish councils in tackling anti-social behaviour, and will legislate at the earliest opportunity to give them powers to issue fixed penalty notices for offences which blight communities like dog-fouling, graffitti, litter, fly-posting and night-time noise."

Falmer Parish Council are really looking forward to getting these new powers.

Ah, but I was raised in Burgess Hill so does that count that I can comment on Aunti Social behaviour in around Burgess Hill without being involved in a scrap? Lived their man and boy for 28 years.

Yeah I was educated in Burgess Hill for 9 years, and its not bad. I am thinking of moving there. I argee about the area around Leylands Park being a bit dodgy though I have been in that area quite a few times coming off Wivelsfield Station and I have had no grief at all.

Please shut up about Burgess Hill HASSOCKS BOY.

IMHO a resident who complains about light pollution under such circumstances should simply be put to death. Then preferably dragged behind a sensible family saloon car for several miles 'pour encourager les autres'. No names, no pack-drill. Gawd bless the little Englanders of mid-Sussex - may their property prices fall through the f***ing floor :salute: :salute: :salute:

SUNNY SEAFORD
When Seaford Town F.C. applied for floodlights, 25 neighbours sent letters of complaint. If you include all the kids, players and staff at Seaford, there must be nearly 300 in total. How much can thicker curtains cost? come on you rich nimbys, you can afford them.
