Did a report on last night's game. Is online now

http://www.hastingsobserver.co.uk/sport?articleid=3073810

Be good if anyone who was there could have a read of it and let me know on here what they think of it - is the first proper report I have done.

As far as the game went for Albion, Cobbs and Lynch looked solid, Fogden played well and Chamberlain showed some nice touches.

Reid was centre mid but did not really control the game as he could have been expected to, although a good run out back from injury.

Gatting held the ball up well and Rents' distribution was good.

Hart struggled a bit though which was surprising and neither goalie looked exactly solid with Hastings' long throws causing a few handling problems.

very good Richie.

Concise report, good use of the subjective and left the reader thinking he or she had been there.

Well done

Mr Grummit is probably right.

But if you want composed and calm, this does it gramatically:-

"The referee pointed to the spot and Carey composed himself to stroke the ball calmly to the left of the Brighton keeper and into the net".

I'd move the "and":-

The referee pointed to the spot. Carey composed himself and calmly stroked the ball to the left of the Brighton keeper and into the net.

But I'm not working to your deadlines, Richie.

Cheers. Will change it for the paper.

That report was written straight after the game when I was little tired but no excuse really.

Headline needs to be catchier as in United Rock Brighton or some such dramatic provincial heading.:albion2:

Standing in the way of control
Corrections bracketed in bold:

Hastings United held League 1 (One) Brighton and Hove Albion to a 1v1 (1-1) draw in front of a bumper (cliche - avoid) crowd at the Pilot Field.

More than 1,000 (a thousand) fans packed into the ground for the long-awaited friendly and most will have been encouraged by what they saw as Nigel Kane's side pushed the visitors all the way.

In fact, had Lee Carey's curling 25 yard (dash required between '25' and 'yard) free kick dipped just a few inches more (lower) in the 68 (68th) minute, United may have ended up celebrating an unlikely victory.

The only incident of a quiet first half was a flashpoint between Hastings striker Ade Olorunda and Brighton's Joel Lynch.

In the 6th (sixth) minute,(no comma required) Olorunda appeared to catch the young defender with a trailing arm, leading to a heated confrontation which looked ready to boil over until referee Keith Yeo and a number of players intervened.

With (not required) Lynch, one of five first teamers on show, (was) formidable for the Albion (inconsistent - you used 'Brighton' before, pick one or the other or just say 'Albion'), (while the)Hastings strike pair of Olorunda and Sam Adams failed to offer much in the way of attack (with the) and the only real problems caused by the long throws of Tom Cusden (long throws from Tom Cusden).

Employed as an attacking right-wing back, Cusden battled well and (comma) together with Lee Carey (comma) was at the heart of most of Hastings (United's, 'Hastings' not required) better moves.

Seagulls striker Sam Gargan twice went close without forcing a save from Lee Worgan but as the half wore on Hastings (see previous correction) back three of Russell, Jimmy Elford and Kevin Rose began to look more assured.

Carey and Scott Kirkwood showed some nice touches in the centre of the park but John Bradley, deployed as an attacking midfielder, struggled to get into the game.

United's best effort came in the 15th minute when Sam Adams had a shot blocked by Cobbs.

Five minutes earlier Adams (had) shot weakly from the edge of the box after a promising run from just inside the Brighton half.

The second 45 minutes started well for the home side and on 55 minutes ('ten minutes after half-time'?) Olorunda struck a fierce shot straight at the Brighton keeper ('keeper or goalkeeper] when a foot either side would have surely led to a goal.

As Hastings tired, Brighton's Scott Chamberlain began to take control of the midfield, and it seemed only a matter of time before the Seagulls took the lead.

Mid-way (no dash required) through the second half they did just that.

After mopping up a wayward long ball, the otherwise composed Nathan Russell surrendered possession with a short pass on the edge of the United penalty box (area) .

Paul Reid pounced on the mistake, clipping a perfect cross toward (towards) the Hastings six yard box.

Brighton striker Joe Gatting lost his marker and dispatched an angled header into the top right hand corner of the Hastings net.

It was no more than the away side deserved but if they were expecting their non-league opponents to roll over they were in for a shock.

Barely 30 seconds after the restart, Lynch gave away a clumsy free-kick and the impressive Carey teased a shot over the Brighton wall only to see it bounce back off the angle of the Brighton goal with seagulls keeper Danny Gay well and truly beaten.

As Brighton scrambled to clear the ball claims for a Hastings penalty were waved away (Claims for a Hastings penalty were waved away by the referee as Albion scrambled to clear the ball) by the referee but the home crowd could sense a goal.

Brighton looked dangerous on the break but with the clock running down it was Hastings mounting (who mounted) serious pressure on their professional opponents.

With only six minutes left, Russell Eldridge, coming more and more into the game as Hastings pressed forward, curled a tantalising ball into the Brighton box.

Kirkwood looked likely to get on the end of it with a clever diagonal run but was blocked by a clear shove from defender Cobbs.

The referee pointed to the spot and Carey composed himself to calmly stroke the ball to the left of the Brighton keeper (see previous corrections and Lord B’s point) and into the net.

Brighton rallied for a late winner but could not force their way past some resolute Hastings defending (comma) and the home side held on for the draw their hardwork just about deserved.

Hastings continue their pre-season programme on Thursday with a trip to Priory Lane to take on an Eastbourne Borough XI, kick-off 7.45pm.

I though Hart played well as did Lynch and reid. I would be worried if Kuipers gets injured and we only have sullivan or gay as niether looked confident on crosses last night. The Hastingskeeper Lee Wogan looked a better bet

there is nothing wrong with split infinitives - they've always existed in English - it was just a casual remark by a 19th century pedant that somehow stuck as being "a bad thing" with no true justification
