Seeing the thread about Henry Allingham, I was prompted to start one about the other surviving Briton from the Great War Harry Patch. Harry was 111 two days ago and was featured in a documentary revisiting Flanders after 80 years or so and also enjoying a beer with the last surviving WW1 veteran from the German side. If only all the soldiers from both sides had said in 1914 "sod this lets go for a beer".

Well done Harry your country must never forget your wonderful service.

My Great Uncle Fred was killed on 10/11/1918, the day before the war finished, aged 18. Had he still been alive, he would now be 109, two years younger than Harry Patch. What an incredible man.

I have nothing but respect for him, and all veterans for that matter.

Just think of all the things that we get taught about in history at school, but that these still living men have seen with their own eyes.

Both Henry and Harry should have been given Knighthoods by now; especially Henry for his services to peace over the years.
